The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
The Dordogne region of South-West France is one of the most beautiful and popular regions of France. Chateaux, beautiful medieval towns and villages, unspoilt countryside and prehistoric caves are just some of the reasons why the region has been attracting visitors for many years.
There are many 'famous sights' in the Dordogne, including: Lascaux caves; Marqueyssac gardens; medieval Sarlat; Chateau Castelnaud; prehistoric caves in the Vezere Valley, etc. Yet it is the places that you visit outside these 'hot-spots' that will stay longest in your memory - the scenery, the peace, the coffee in a small cafe, the picnic next to a stream.
St Amand de Coly area
In a hamlet, half way between St Amand de Coly and Montignac, in the heart of the most visited area of Black Périgord, thanks to its rich cultural heritage, historic and pre historic sites and of course its many gastronomic delicacies. An excellent base to discover this beautiful region of France.
St Amand de Coly itself is set nine kilometres east of Montignac and boasts a superbly beautiful fortified Romanesque church, a magical venue for concerts in the summer. Despite its bristling military architecture, the twelfth-century church manages to combine great delicacy and spirituality, with its purity of line and simple decoration most evocative in the low sun of late afternoon or early evening.
Its defences left nothing to chance: the walls are 4m thick, a ditch runs all the way around, and a passage once skirted the eaves, with numerous positions for archers to rain down arrows, and blind stairways to mislead attackers.
In the area are plenty of activities to keep the whole family busy...Horse riding, fishing, Lakes, rivers and watersports, Tennis, theme parks and Canoe/Kayak hire.
