2½ miles from St Agnes and 1¼ miles by bridleway and footpath from the 16th cent. pub in Mithian (village) are four detached cottages, of which we let two, in 3 acres of deeply wooded, landscaped gardens (for you to enjoy), full of rhododendron, camellia, mature trees, a lily pond and little trout stream (toddlers must be supervised). All lovingly created from a bramble wilderness by the charming owners who live in one of the cottages, along with two friendly cats. Cornwall Wildlife Trust woodlands (footpaths) adjoin the gardens. Reached by 700 yards of uneven hardcore track from a road, it is an incredibly private, tranquil place with only the occasional passing horse rider. The Granary is a pretty little single-storey cottage with stable doors into open-plan living/dining/fitted kitchen (microwave) with TV/DVD/video, woodburner; bathroom (suite plus bath-shower); double bedroom with very pretty views through French windows to patio (table/chairs) and daisy-covered lawn.

The West Country region

The Newquay coast: from the Hayle estuary near St Ives and Gwithian Towans to the Trevose peninsula stretch, almost continuously, superb sand/surf beaches. Newquay – on the railway and with airport (flights from London and a number of regional airports and flights to the Scilly Isles) – is the surfing capital, full of amusements, arcades, young people, pubs and 'life', short on some other things, but pretty harbour and what beaches (Fistral, Tolcarne)! Watergate Bay (just up the coast road from Newquay), home to the Extreme Academy, is the place to go if you're feeling adventurous - try surfing, kitesurfing, waveskiing or stand-up paddleboarding. If you're not an adrenaline junkie, it's also a good spot for the gourmet; Jamie Oliver has opened a restaurant, 'Fifteen', there. St Agnes, a little ex-tin-mining town, has preserved itself remarkably (small proper shops) and attractively. Bedruthan Steps (cliff-high rocks tower out of the beach) is one of the great coast sights (and low-tide walks). Easy drive to The Eden Project (see South Cornwall).

St Agnes

St Agnes: attractive, unspoilt tiny town with useful shops, pubs, craft workshops. Trevaunance Cove (sheltered sand/surf beach), ½ mile; another fine beach (Chapel Porth), 1½ miles. Spectacular landscape (mine house ruins) and splendid walks (coast path, seals). Riding stables nearby. Golf (Perranporth), 4½ miles. Newquay, 12 miles; Truro (Cornwall's capital), 8; St Ives, 20.
