In the centre of St Agnes, facing over wooded public gardens (bluebells in May), a row of three Victorian cottages of which we let two. Totally convenient for all the shops, pubs and cafés. Parking possible outside, but best to leave the car in the free car park and take the frequent buses (bus stop, 10 yards). ... No. 2: at the back, small, paved courtyard (table/chairs). Inside, completely transformed to 21st cent. comfortable cosiness. From pavement, door into dining room with oak floor and fireplace (woodburner); living room with TV/DVD; fitted kitchen (dishwasher, washer-drier, microwave, fridge-freezer, cooker with induction hob) with back door to courtyard. From dining room, steep stairs up to two bedrooms, both double (5' beds), one with en suite shower-room (suite); bathroom (suite plus bath-shower). A terrific cottage, right in the centre of things. No children under 5, except pre-crawling babies. No. 2: at the back, small, paved courtyard (table/chairs). Inside, completely transformed to 21st cent. comfortable cosiness. The Cornwall region

The Newquay coast: from the Hayle estuary near St Ives and Gwithian Towans to the Trevose peninsula stretch, almost continuously, superb sand/surf beaches. Newquay – on the railway and with airport (flights from London and a number of regional airports and flights to the Scilly Isles) – is the surfing capital, full of amusements, arcades, young people, pubs and 'life', short on some other things, but pretty harbour and what beaches (Fistral, Tolcarne)! Watergate Bay (just up the coast road from Newquay), home to the Extreme Academy, is the place to go if you're feeling adventurous - try surfing, kitesurfing, waveskiing or stand-up paddleboarding. If you're not an adrenaline junkie, it's also a good spot for the gourmet; Jamie Oliver has opened a restaurant, 'Fifteen', there. St Agnes, a little ex-tin-mining town, has preserved itself remarkably (small proper shops) and attractively. Bedruthan Steps (cliff-high rocks tower out of the beach) is one of the great coast sights (and low-tide walks). Easy drive to The Eden Project (see South Cornwall).

St Agnes

St Agnes: attractive, unspoilt tiny town with useful shops, pubs, craft workshops. Trevaunance Cove (sheltered sand/surf beach), ½ mile; another fine beach (Chapel Porth), 1½ miles. Spectacular landscape (mine house ruins) and splendid walks (coast path, seals). Riding stables nearby. Golf (Perranporth), 4½ miles. Newquay, 12 miles; Truro (Cornwall's capital), 8; St Ives, 20.
