The Umbria region
Just east of Tuscany, north of Rome and west of the Marches, right in the middle of what would be the national calf muscle if Italy really were a leg encased in an Italian leather boot. A region of many enchanting medieval towns where you should plan to stop on your way from Rome to Florence. You will find it well worth your while, for it is as interesting as Tuscany but far less crowded and expensive.
Umbria lies in the shadow of its more illustrious neighbor, Tuscany, but perhaps self-imposed modesty is an inbred trait here. That would explain the relative obscurity of this beautiful region, a land whose rolling hills are dotted with castles, fortresses and watchtowers, whose well-preserved hill towns produce world-renowned handmade ceramics, whose many monasteries were founded by a host of local saints, whose valleys are laced with countless gleaming rivers and host Italy's largest lake. In Umbria, halfway up the slopes of Monte Fumaiolo, a trickle seeps out of the ground and wanders southward, gaining breadth and notoriety to become Rome's mighty Tiber. Any traveler who goes from Florence to Rome by land passes through the Tiber Valley, whose Umbrian locales include such towns as Assisi, Spoleto and Orvieto.
Spoleto area
Spoleto, home of the Festival of Two Worlds, has been a cultural centre for centuries, since the Roman period. Arriving on the Via Flaminia, you can't miss the Rocca Albornoz, a medieval castle, and the Two Tower Bridge. Once in town, you are back in the land of warmth and harmony. Seen from outside, the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is unforgettable, with its terra cotta-paved piazza, symmetrical belltower and golden Byzantine mosaic. Inside are Fra Filippo Lippi's frescoes, possibly Michelangelo's inspiration for the Sistine Chapel, and Pintoricchio's frescos. The magnificent 10th-century church of Sant'Eufemia was the court church of the Dukes of Spoleto, hence its soaring vault. In the municipal cemetery, the church of San Salvatore has a very rare 4th-century facade. Nature is also great and wild, and surronded the town. From the historic centre of the town, In few minutes walking, you can reach the countryside or the mountain, Monteluco, along many paths.
