Home description
15 minutes from Spoleto it is possible to feel completely in the heart of unspoilt country with forest walks and sunset views and only birdsong to break the silence. The small hamlet of 5 houses, only two of which are restored, is a retreat from the well populated valley of Spoleto but close to all the local facilities when they are needed. The house is comfortable and well furnished and it is easy to cook well at home or eat out locally. This is a place for a rest with many local attractions and a good supply of regional restaurants and vineyards to visit. In the evenings the stars are bright, the stone walls dotted with glow worms and once the bats have settled at dusk the fireflies appear. Spoleto is a city famous for its musical and cultural festivals. The charming cobbled streets lead to stunning vistas of Romanesque churches, Roman theatres, piazzas, mueums and the city outline is topped by the dramatic outline of the 11thC fortress, La Rocca, recently restored.

The Umbria region
Umbria is called the Green Heart of Italy and the fertile valley running between Perugia and Assisi is at the centre of this heart. It is always possible to escape the intense heat of summer by climbing into the forested hills and the recent winters have been mostly mild. Umbria is dotted with many beautiful mediaeval hill towns and cities: Orvieto, Todi, Perugia, Trevi, Montefalco, Spello, Spoleto, and each has a rotation of festivals which celebrate the food, wine and culture of the area. Olive oil, truffles, pasta, asparagus, celery, salamis, wine and chocolate each have separate annual festivals and then there are Festivals to celebrate Jazz, Opera, International Music as well as many touring groups who are welcomed each year. .
Spoleto / Passo D'Acera area
The city of Spoleto was a Roman colony from 241 B.C.and there is plenty of evidence today of the theatres, roads, arches and houses of this period. Today the city is a cultural centre of international fame and there is a great sense of development and welcome for visitors. The city is proud of its way of life and the cultural activities it supports - many performing groups visit and bring an exchange of their culture so that the city is vibrant and aware. The regional food is celebrated in local restaurants and by a famous Umbrian Cooking school established in the city. There are books in the house to guide you to particular restaurants but it is usual to be served excellent food at very reasonable prices. The Piano Grande - just over an hour's drive south west - is a magnificent plateau scattered in the vibrant colours of wild flowers in June. Forest walks are easy to take directly from the house or along marked trails between Spoleto and Assisi. Wine Tasting in Montefalco is fun There is a lovely lake and with swimming pools and light food available near Terni which also allows a visit to the Marmore Waterfalls in the Val de Nera - spectacular. There is trout fishing in Scheggino and also in the Val de Nera it is possible to hire river rafts
