Home description

THE TOWER OF THE DOVES - LA TORRE COLOMBAIA - 6 people (and two very little children)

You cross a small internal cobbled courtyard, to enter this apartment. It is 120 sq. metres and comprises a living room with kitchen area, a luxury sitting room, a bedroom with three single beds and a bathroom with Jacuzzi bathtub on the ground floor; a bedroom with a double and a single bed, a shower bathroom and an attic room on the upper floor. The second bedroom is situated in the tower which architecturally dominates the complex. From here there is a wonderful panoramic view which includes Spoleto and Montefalco. This apartment is ideal for family groups and couples of friends who need their own privacy.
The guests have the excluse use of a little courtyard equipped with table and chairs; the use of a common big garden with a little barbecue and of a orchard with sun umbrella and deck-chairs.

During the low season we can rent a part of the apartment, for 2/3 people (70 sq metres: the smalll internal cobbled courtyard, the living room with kitchen area, the bedroom with a double and a single bed, a shower bathroom and an attic room on the upper floor).

There are bicycles for the use of guests; near here there is a good cycle track from Spoleto to Assisi and many other country or mountain paths.
Our guests are also given the produce of the vegetable garden and orchard according to season.

Nearby there is a very little market where is possible to order any kind of food you like, also ready to cook. The owner cook also complete and delicious meals for our guests.
The place is great for people who love the peaceful and relax of the countryside and at the same time want to visit all the historic and artistic sites of Umbria (Spoleto, Assisi, Perugia, Deruta, Montefalco, Bevagna, Spello, Norcia, Cascia, Amelia, Narni) and of the south part of Tuscany (Arezzo, Cortona, Siena), and cities like Florence (2 hours) and Rome (1 hour and 30 minutes both by the train or tha car).

The Umbria region

Umbria is an enclave of tranquillity between the powerhouses of Lazio and Tuscany, a rural region dubbed the ‘Green Heart of Italy’, life here is laid-back and peaceful. With their buildings made of grey-pink stone, Umbria’s towns, among them Perugia and Spoleto, have their own charm.

Spoleto / Poreta area

The house is situated on the edge of the historic centre of Poreta (12 kilometres from Spoleto) a small village which retains the character and charm of this region and has a 14th century castle overlooking it. The village is found beside The road of the extra-virgin olive oil which goes from Spoleto to Assisi. All the hills on the east side of this road are characterized by olive groves, which probably date from the roman period, terraced with stone walls. The landscape is dominated by the silver green colour of these trees which rises to a brilliant green of pine woods and oaks on the higher slopes. There are numerous castles still inhabited on the tops of the hills. Reaching the hill of Montefalco you see long rows of cultivated grapes and this is The road of the Sagrantino along which there are many small cantinas still producing the special D.O.C.G. wine. Following the rivers which flow through the nearby Valnerina, you can find the best examples of Romanesque churches in Umbria.

Guestbook

We stayed in the 'tower of the doves apartment' on this property. We were 2 couples travelling by car. The villa is situated in the small town of Poreta which we found very central to explore most areas within Umbria. The villa itself was absolutely charming with lots of character and was exactly what we had hoped for. The hosts Marco and Cinzia have gone to enormous efforts with the decor and could not have tried harder to make us feel comfortable. They were able to advise on what to see and do within the area. Every room was beautiful and clean. The kitchen was large and fully equipped (including coffee machine), something we did not find anywhere else on our trip throughout Italy. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, lounge, kitchen/dining area and a private courtyard. Having its own washing machine with a supply of washing powder was a bonus. We can only give praise to the two young hosts (Marco e Cinzia) and would highly recommend this property.

I stayed with friends at this property last year and plan a visit this year too. The Tower is a magical place . It is old and rustic yet comfortable with all mod cons. Situated in the middle of glorious countryside with views across to Spoleto the only sounds are of the animals. To hear your very own Chanticler crowing at dawn is to be transported back to Chaucer's time (or as we are in Italy) Bocaccio's.The Tower is very spacious with a splendid sitting area full of antiques and old master paintings and very comfotable beds in both bedrooms, one of which is in the actual tower. There is a good sitting area outside for brekfast/dinner. Everything is well run by the Pauselli family. Cinzia is in overall control; her mother runs the very comprehensive shop and prepares meals for you if you like made with local produce and very reasonable too. We had 2 dinner parties for friends with everything provided by Rosaria, even th e local wine.We also had a celebratory dinner outside with the family and local residdents and frequent gifts of cappuchinos and Rosaria's latest cake. Cinzia is a mine of information about the area and provides maps and guides at a moment's notice. She makes everything run smoothly. Poreta is alittle village with a castle--a very good restaurant now and a church which wakens you on a Sunday with the oddest peal of bells. It is a very sleepy place with a very old dog invariably aslleep in the middle of the very narrow road. Nearby is the delightful town of Spoleto with a great range of restaurants and cafes and a splendid cathedral with lovely frescoes by Fra Lippi. There are many other interesting places nearby; Montefalco, todi, Spello are just 3 at random we visited. Most of all this is a place to wind down, to sit outside with a bottle of the local wine, read ,chat and enjoy La Dolce Vita. I recommend the Tower for that. It is a good size (it will take 6 comfortably) and has everything to make it a home from home and a lot that you will not find so easily.
David
