This prestigious estate, nestled in the hills around Spoleto, belongs to the heirs of the family della Genga until the XV century. In 1673 the villa was built in a setting of rare beauty and evocative stillness: it was the favorite hunting house of Cardinal Annibale della Genga, who, in 1823, was elected Pope taking the name of Leo XII.

These houses, once agricultural, have been lovingly restored and converted into luxury homes.

Il Grottone with Ziri and Colombaia is one of these estates:

The large round arc frames the stone wall in which, between two columns, a monumental fireplace was added. This vast and scenic open space full of light, offers the opportunity to enjoy the different spaces between modern and ancient architecture: on the one hand the island / steel kitchen, on the other the dining crystal table, the nearest entrance to the living room overlooking the terraced garden. On the same floor a double room with bathroom and small closet. Outside, terraced garden, dining table with chairs and umbrella, plus a barbecue.

The overhead stairs provides access to the gallery used as a studio and to second bedroom with bathroom.

Relaxing, fun and unique experience in one of the ancient estates in the Spoleto valley.

"A magical stay in the green heart of italy...."

We discovered the Villa della Genga 8 years ago, the first year they began to welcome guests. We stayed in "the Grottone" apartment that first year and fell in love -- with the property, Poreta - the quaint village in which it is located; the family, and the Spoleto valley. We have returned for a full month ever summer since. The property, which sits in the hills below the Castello of Porteta amid acres of olive grows, is private, peaceful and impeccable. Grottone was created from the former building in which olives were stored and pressed, and boasts a dramatic "live" wall, beautiful modern kitchen and comfortable sitting area and 2 bedrooms, along with a private patio adjoining the Villa's formal gardens, above the pool. You'll feel perfectly at home, welcomed but not smothered by the Montani family. We cook a lot; the kitchen is well appointed and there is a grill with wood supplied upon request. The pool is beautifully sited and more than big enough to swim laps or just cool off after relaxing in the sun. And Poreta is a wonderful spot from which to explore nearby Spoleto and other lovely hill towns in the valley. I enjoy walking the St. Francis trail which runs above the Villla through the woods as well as running in the olive grows below. We have sent and welcomed friends to Villa della Genga, and all have thanked us for sharing our "find" with them!
