The Dalmatia region

Dalmatia is an historical region of Croatia on the eastern coast of the adriatic sea. The hinterland, the dalmatian Zagora, ranges from fifty kilometres in width in the north to just a few kilometres in the south. The dalmatian dog received its name from Dalmatia, as does the dalmatic, a Roman catholic liturgical vestment worn by deacons and bishops.

Dalmatia signified not only a geographical unit, but was an entity based on common culture and settlement types, a common narrow eastern Adriatic coastal belt, Mediterranean climate, sclerophyllous vegetation of the Illyrian province, Adriatic carbonate platform, and karst geomorphology.

Split

Split - The second largest city in Croatia and the biggest Croatian city on the eastern Adriatic coastline is situated between the Zrnovnica river in the east and the Jadro river in the west. Well-known for its Marjan hill green spaces that offer diverse recreational possibilities, 15 km long seaside promenade and charming sounds of Dalmatian music playing on the ancient streets, Split is located on one of the sunniest coasts of the Mediterranean. As a result, it benefits from the Mediterranean climate and 2700 sunshine hours per year.

Sites such as Diocletian's Palace and Mausoleum, the Grgur Ninski Statue and the Cathedral and Bell Tower of St. Domnius justify its position as a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site. The city's coves offer several lovely beaches, including central Bacvice. Ferries link Split to Dalmatian summer resorts.

Split is a slow-paced city and it is easy to get used to its everyday rhythm. The streets, squares, bars and restaurants packed with people on a daily basis make it easy for visitors to feel like home here.
