The Dalmatia region
Dalmatia is one of the most magical Mediterranean regions.
Known as the coast of thousand islands, with crystal clear sea, fragrant pine trees, lavender fields,
rich history and culture.
It has hot and dry summers, 29C-34C with sea temperature between 24C-26C, mild winters (12C).
This climate conditions and rare beauty, makes it one of the leading and most desirable tourist destination today.
In the middle of Dalmatia on the Adriatic coast lies the ancient city of Split.
The central part of the city is criss-crossed with a narrow stone streets, ancient monuments and medieval buildings. Remains of the 1700 years old palace, makes the core upon which the city grew.
Well preserved to this day, remains of ancient buildings, together with the later medieval extensions,
Split in 1979 became part of the UNESCO, and the world cultural heritage.
Diocletian palace is named after the Roman Emperor Gaius Aurelius Valerius Diocletianus.
Palace was built as his mansion and retirement home. The site was first settled when the Roman Emperor Diocletian built his palace here at the end of the third century AD. The importance of Diocletian's Palace far exceeds local significance due to its level of preservation and the buildings of succeeding historical periods built within its walls, which today form the very heart of old Split.
Split's growth became rapid in the 7th century, when the inhabitants of the destroyed Greek and Roman metropolis Salonae (present-day Solin) took refuge within its walls. Split was an autonomous commune in the Middle Ages.
Many of Split's historical and cultural buildings can be found within the walls of Diocletian's Palace and numerous museums, the National Theatre, and old churches and other archeological sites in the Split region make it an important cultural attraction.
Due to its perfect geographical position, from Split it is easy to reach many attractions in just one or two hours. The boat excursions to the Middle Dalmatia Islands are highly recommended because on one day you can take a swim on one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, the beach of Golden Horn ( Zlatni Rat), on the island of Brac and the day after you can find yourself exploring all the hidden bays of the island of Hvar. We also recommend the trip to Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina where millions of pilgrims from all around the world come to visit the place where Virgin Mary is appearing in last 25 years.
Split is urban, cultural and traffic centre of Dalmatia – southern coastal region of Croatia. It’s situated on one of sunniest parts of Mediterranean with up to 2700 sunny hours a year. Town with 1700 years of existence has numerous archaeological, cultural and historical monuments. Most famous of them is Diocletian’s palace – part of UNESCO world heritage. Split has warmth and attraction of modern Mediterranean city.
City history can be explored in numerous museums, and, if that makes you tired – you can take a walk to Park Forest Marjan and enjoy easy walk in shade of hundred year old pines.
Culture and entertainment is always rich – specially in the summer – when Split’s squares, promenades, yards and other spaces turn into large open stage. If you are more of the gastronome– you’ll enjoy Mediterranean cuisine and sea specialities in numerous restaurants and taverns (traditional Dalmatian konoba).
Numerous beaches in and nearby Split provides you place to enjoy sea, sun and/or water sports.
Finally, Split is ideal starting point to explore numerous romantic townlets surrounding Split, it’s central position and good traffic connections enables you to take daily trips to nearby islands, national parks etc.
From Split it is easy to make a trip into the hinterland, and visit the so called eco-villages.
Excursions to the National Park Krka and Plitvice Lakes, trips to the beautiful islands surrounding Split:
Brac, Solta, Hvar, Vis, Korcula, or visit to the neighboring historical towns: Trogir, Omis, Sibenik can all be arrange in Split.
Split is also suitable for the active sports holidays, with different sport activities: sailing, diving, rafting, golfing ...
If you are a nature lover, not far from the city center you can enjoy the Forest Park “Marijan”, a thick pine forest on the hills that descends to the sea and to the numerous beautiful sandy, pebble and rocky beaches.
Connection between Dalmatia and nature is best felt in its gastronomy. Dalmatian cuisine
is well known for its diverse and rich Mediterranean scents and flavors including the famous Dalmatian wines.
