The County Galway/County Clare region
Our cottage is situated in the Connemara National Park with its stunning scenery - sandy beaches, and Mamturk and The Bens moutain ranges. This wild landscape is dotted with lakes, moorland, peat bogs. The many small Irish speaking towns and villages, surrounded by fields with dry stone walls celebrate many local festivals and traditions. We are ideally situated for day trips to the Burren, Clifden, Westport, Kylemore Abbey, Roundstone and Ballyconneely. The A59 from Moycullen to Clifden features in Top Gear's Top 100 drives in the world!
Take time to go by ferry (10 minutes away) to visit the Aran Islands. Inismor the largest contains the World Heritage site of Dun Aengus a celtic fort with 350 ft cliffs down to the sea.
Connemara is the focus of Irish culture. There is live, traditional music in the pubs, artists, poets and craft workers. In autumn and winter the air is laced with the small of traditional peat fires.
The house is situated half a mile down from the main road towards the sea which is another half a mile away. Ballynahown is a small residential village with a local fishing lake (3 minutes away). There are two pubs about 5 minutes drive and a local shop at the top of the road which stocks everything you need. Our local, beautiful sandy beach 5 minutes drive or 15 minute stroll away - great for just lazing around or bbqing in the evenings. The nearest small town is Spiddal which has pubs offering traditional music sessions, restaurants, a great coffee shop, Craft Centre, beach and pier. Further towards Galway, Barna has more fantastic restaurants a large supermarket and upmarket hotel The 12 with its own pizzeria.
Galway itself retains its traditional Irish character. Most of the pubs have music sessions. There are theatres, festivals, great shopping in brightly coloured shops in traditional narrow winding streets. This is a young, vibrant city with a great buzz and no traffic in the City Centre itself. By far the best city in Ireland and weekendable!
