Tigh Lals is a 300 year old thatched cottage, recently restored to provide all amenities needed for modern living, located minutes’ walk from two beaches, restaurants, cafés, shops and pubs playing traditional Irish music nightly.
This thatched cottage provides an ideal base for families or groups of friends looking to explore all the West of Ireland has to offer, including vibrant Galway City, the beautiful Connemara region and the Aran Islands. The unique geological formations and flora of the Burren and the world famous Cliffs of Moher are easily accessible by car or by tours which leave Galway City hourly. We would be delighted to help with planning of your day trips around Connemara and beyond.
There is a safe garden area in front of the cottage, while secure off-road parking is available at the rear. The cottage itself has 3 bedrooms (one double bedroom ensuite downstairs, one double with toilet/WHB upstairs and one twin room upstairs) housing 6 adults comfortably. Cots for children are available on request. The kitchen is fully stocked with all mod cons, and oil central heating available if necessary. Free Wi-Fi is available in the local library (15 seconds walk away!) during working hours.

Galway City
Gaway is renowned for its nightlife, summer festivals, traditional music and theatre. With hundreds of pubs, clubs, cafes and restaurants, Galway has no shortage of urban amenities to explore.
Connemara
Spiddal is located in Connemara, one of the most scenic areas in Ireland, dominated by the majestic Twelve Bens and Maum Turks mountain ranges, dotted with lakes and rivers, with hundreds of small bays and harbours to explore. The Irish language (Gaeilge) is widely spoken in Spiddal and much of Connemara, and many Irish traditions, customs, folklore and music are preserved here. Connemara is best explored by car, with a number of stunning routes beginning and ending at Tigh Lals Thatched Cottage! We would be delighted to help you plan your driving trip around this beautiful area.
Festivals
Galway is renowned for its summer festivals, which seem to run into each other all summer long! This year Galway welcomes finishing leg of the Volvo Ocean Race, the world famous Galway Arts Festival and the Galway Oyster Festival. The horse racing enthusiasts throng to Galway in their thousands in the end of July/early August to attend the Galway Races. Be prepared for some great racing and packed streets post racing!
Aran Islands
These three islands, Inis Mór, Inis Meáin and Inis Oirr are situated at the mouth of Galway bay. The Irish language is the main spoken tongue on the islands, which is also famous for its sea cliffs, geological rock formations, historical fortresses and its cultural heritage. The Aran islands are easily accessible from Tigh Lal, ferry access is a 20 minute drive from the cottage while flights are available a mere 10 minutes drive from the cottage.
The Burren and Cliffs of Moher
Situated in north county Clare and south county Galway, the Burren is an area of unique natural beauty, stunning rock formations and underground waterways and plant life. Located in west Clare, a visit to the world famous Cliffs of Moher is a must-do for anyone visiting the West of Ireland, offering amazing views over the Atlantic Ocean, Aran Islands, Maum Turk and Twelve Bens mountain ranges. Tours of the Burren and Cliffs of Moher are available daily, leaving from Galway city.

The Spiddal area
The Spiddal area boasts a wide variety of activities and attractions that can be enjoyed by all. Spiddal has two local beaches. Trá na mBan, is located on the roadside east of the village, 1 minute walk from the cottage. Another beach is located beside a sheltered pier, accessible by a small road or path just west of the village.
Needless to say, all your shopping needs can be met in Galway city. However, if you wish to stay local, shopping is available within walking distance in Standún's, a unique award winning family run store.
For the golf enthusiast, there are a number of courses within easy reach. The 18 hole championship course in Bearna is a 15 minute drive, while there are other courses located in Leitir Mór, Oughterard and of course Salthill.
Horse riding is available locally in Moycullen and Oughterard, while mountain biking is availale in Derroura, about 40 minutes drive from Spiddal. Mountain bikes can be rented inMoycullen.
Sea fishing is possible from the local pier and river fishing is available on the local river (Abhainn Boluisce). Sea fishing boats can be chartered and lessons also available locally.
Visit the local craft village (An Ceardlann) to see traditional artists at work and sample their wares if the mood takes you! There are 10 craft workers based here, whose skills include hand weaving, contemporary ceramic pottery, stained glass and visual art.

Tigh Lal's thatched cottage is located in the picturesque seaside village of Spiddal (An Spidéal), 12 miles west of Galway City along the Connemara coast road (R336). From Galway city follow road traffic signs for An Spidéal. Tigh Lal's thatched cottage is located in the centre of the village, minutes walk from all local amenities.
