About the home

Ty Gwenn is located in the quiet and peaceful hamlet of Kergonoiu, just two minutes from the river l'Aulne and 1 mile from the centre of Spezet , yet only a fifteen minute drive from the larger market towns of Carhaix and Chateaulin. The house has easy access to all amenities and many excellent restaurants both in Spezet and the nearby historical town of Chateauneuf du Faou.

The property has been recently restored to a high standard yet it still retains its French charm, offering a newly fitted kitchen toghether with a full range of crockery to suit the most adventurous of cooks , two bathrooms (one en suite), washing machine,electric heating ,satellite TV, DVD player and DAB hi fi .

The tastefully furnished lounge features exposed beams and a large centre piece stone fireplace and stove. Both bedrooms provide ample accommodation with the master bedroom having further space for a cot if needed.The master bedroom features a king size bed and the second bedroom has two single beds.The house is ideal for families, with plenty in the surrounding area to see and do during your stay.

The enclosed and level gardens both front and rear are furnished with a table and chairs to enable you to dine outdoors. The region is perfect for those who like walking and hiking, whilst the river l'Aulne caters for both canoeing and fishing enthusiasts. There are also some excellent cycling routes along the many beautiful country lanes (three adult mountain bikes plus a child's bike are on site for your use). There are a number of horse riding schools in the area with plenty of picturesque bridle paths to explore.Wild life is abundant, with kingfisher, heron and many other beautiful birds to watch, as well as the occasional otter and even coypu in the river L'aulne 1 km from the house. Children and families, fishing parties , couples or even individuals seeking tranquile surroundings are all well catered for.

The Brittany / Finistere region

Chateauneuf du Faou is only 8km away a beautiful Breton market town nestling in the Montagnes Noires. 18 bars, several good restaurants (recommend Le Relais de Cornouaille), regular Breton Festivals and a brilliant Jazz Festival on the banks of the beautiful River l'Aulne in August. The town is amazingly unspoiled and underplayed in all the guide books.

The town of Carhaix is only 7km away. In late July it hosts a famous 3 day rock festival (U2 ,Bruce Springsteen, Muse and the Killers have recently played there).

The medieval city of Quimper is a little over 20 minutes away with its spectacular cathedral, fascinating winding streets, half timbered buildings and chic shops, bars and restaurants. A little further inland lies the quaint lakeside town of Huelgoat with mystery walks into the forest with its enormous and fascinating boulders.

Chateaulin is the largest main town to the house approximately 15 minutes away by car, and has a very reliable train station which goes to other larger towns like Brest or Quimper.

Chateaulin is located on the banks of the river l'Aulne, it has plenty of shops, bars restaurants, banks and is renowned for its famous salmon run through the town with day permits readily available.
Fishing
Both course and sea fishing are extremely good here. Day (10€ approx) or week (30€ approx) tourist licenses can be obtained for your stay, A range of sea and river fishing activities for novices to experts are available.

The Spezet area

A small yet lively traditional french village 2km from the river l'Aulne The village offers all amenities.

For night life Spezet itself has a number of lively bars and restaurants catering for all tastes indeed the village boasts a Disco which is well frequented at the weekend.

The property is just 20 mins from the beautiful and rugged Crozon peninsula with its many beautiful unspoilt beaches.

It makes an ideal base camp being close to the west coast for beaches and cliff top walking You can explore the Monts D'Arrée National Park and the Montagnes Noires - both delightful regions for walking, hiking or cylcling. Often described as similar to Cornwall (though much less crowded), you may just fall in love with the rugged landscape and golden beaches of this wonderful and inspiring part of the world.

With such variety there really is something for everyone - whether you like to visit a chic resort like Benodet on the South Coast, or any of the hundreds of secluded beaches on the Corzon peninsula. Even in the height of summer you can often find yourselves alone on a beach here.

There are not just the sandy beaches and rock pools, but also many other attractions:
- The Oceanopolis Aquarium
- Castle Museum at Brest
- The Aquarium at Pont-l’abbe
- The Planetarium & France Telecom Science Centre
- Swimming Pools at Chateauneuf, Chateaulin, Carhaix and a multi – pool at Quimper.
- Several amusement parks, the largest and best equipped being “La Recre des trios cures” near Brest.
- Salmon Fishing at Chateaulin, canal fishing locally (1/4 mile walk)
- Beautiful Canal walks and cycle paths locally, or at Chateaulin and elsewhere
- There is boat hire close by at Pont-Coblant on the river Aulne, and boat and cycle hire on the river Aulne at Chateauneuf, where there is also indoor swimming.

Flights start from £9 when booked in advance with FlyBe from Manchester, Birmingham, Exeter and Southampton Airports to Brest Airport which is a 45 minutes drive to the house, or Rennes Airport approx 120 minutes drive away.

RyanAir fly from Luton to Brest, Air France flies from Heathrow to Brest, there are also direct flights via Paris from a number of UK airports. It's also possible to fly from London City to Quimper.

The nearest ferry port is at Roscoff, 85kms away. Several ferries cross from Plymouth each day and take about 6 hours to reach France. Other possible ferry ports are St Malo (2 hr drive) and Cherbourg (4hr drive).

Another possibility is to take the TGV from London to Paris and then on to Brest.

“Very peaceful, large relaxing garden and nice views” Stayed twice this year, Great location peaceful, scenic and ideally situated for exploring the surrounding towns and villages. The Gite is well presented, clean and equipped well with good quality furnishings. The large garden gets the sun all day and is ideal for relaxing and absorbing the country atmosphere
