About this location

The Saint Peter Parish region

British sailors who landed on Barbados in the 1620s at the site of present-day Holetown on the west coast found the island uninhabited.As elsewhere in the eastern Caribbean Arawak Indians may have been annihilated by invading Caribs who are believed to have subsequently abandoned the Island.

From the arrival of the first British settlers in 1627-28 until independence in 1966,Barbados was under uninterupted British control.

Nevertheless Barbados always enjoyed a large measure of local autonomy.

Its house of Assembly which began meeting in 1639 is the third oldest legislative body in the Western Hemisphere preceded only by Bermuda's legislature and the Virginia House of Burgesses.

As the sugar industry developed into the main commercial enterprise, Barbados was divided into large plantation estates which replaced the small holdings of the early British settlers.

Some of the displaced farmers relocated to British Colonies in North America.

In order to work the plantations,slaves were brought from Africa ;the slave trade ceased a few years before the abolition of slavery throughout the British Empire in 1834.

The Vuemont development on Mount Brevitor was previously a sugar plantation.

The Island is divided into 11 parishes and the city of Bridgetown for administrative purposes.

There is no local government.

Barbados has a constant temperature range with a welcome cooling breeze.


Speightstown, a few minutes drive away, is a charming, unspoilt town, with a selection of shops and restaurants, a fish market and PADI dive school.

Vuemont, formally named The Lakes, is ideally situated with easy access to both the East and West coasts.

If you are after picture postcard sandy beaches and calm azure sea the West coast offers numerous options which include Port St Charles, Mullins and further south Sandy Lane at Holetown area.

If you prefer your coasts rugged, deserted and windswept, go east for a short drive to the Atlantic coast where dramatic breakers pound the deserted shore around Bathsheba.

There are numerous tourist attractions within easy reach, including St Nicholas Abbey, Barbados Wildlife Reserve, Farley Hill Estate, Butterfly Flower, Harrison Cave.

World class dining is available throughout the Island many good restaurants along the West coast.

There are several golf courses nearby, green fees are expensive.

Racing in Bridgetown, Polo at Apes Hill.

"We had the best holiday ever staying at Apt 259"

After 7 years of Tour operator All inc holidays around the caribbean it was time for a change but a little worried about going it alone & booking everything direct. We needn't have worried & will most certainly be doing it again we even got to spend 17 days here instead of the usual 7/14 day tour operator packages.

We had decided on Barbados & after shortlisting a few properties we kept coming back to Apt 259 Vuemont. We loved the description & the idea of it being higher up & getting nice breezes yet still with a sea view & with the added bonus of the swimming pools & other facilities knew we could have days by the pool if we didn't fancy the short drive to one of the many beaches.

Communication via e-mail with Mr & Mrs Ryder was very easy & prompt, answering any questions we had.
The property is exactly as described & internal photo's of the apartment ( even though I think the photos were taken a while ago). are exactly what we found when we arrived a spacious well maintained Immaculate apartment, & equipped with everything you could want.
I have to say the external photo's don't do the grounds justice the gardens trees flowers shrubs etc have matured beautifully & are tended to daily by a team of gardeners.
Arriving in the dark it was breath-taking to come out the first morning & see how beautiful it all was. We even saw a couple of green monkeys making there way across the lawns.
Vuemont is very peaceful location & after a hot day at the beach or out exploring other parts of the island very refreshing to come back to & just sit out on the veranda to eat & just chill out with a glass of wine or a banks & a nice cooling breeze & with just the sounds of crickets.
The other thing we found was hardly any mosquito's we only saw one at the apartment.

We never had any concerns about safety & security but there is security as you drive in to Vuemont & you would see the security guy walking around the grounds at night time.

A car is definitely recommended. We booked ours online & completed the paperwork before we arrived & collected at the airport. Driving to the apartment was about 40 mins & very straight forward. Having a car made getting about the island very easy & there is so much to see, the nearest beaches being only 5 minutes drive away.
Nowhere is very far by car but I do recommend a sat nav & driving is very easy especially if you are travelling from the UK. Even I drove us a few times.

We shopped, catered, cooked & cleaned for ourselves but we actually had the best & the most relaxing holiday ever. Firstly because you could do everything at your own pace & secondly because the apartment was so well equipped.

I'm sure our holidays in future will be staying here & hopefully for longer. Just wish we had discovered this little gem sooner.

"Exactly as described -could not of asked for better in all aspects"

Wonderful location and apartment. We stayed here as a family of four during the may half term. On arrival to Barbados we were surprised at how easily we found the loction.
The apatment itself was beautiful - well maintined and fully equipped. Everything you could possibly need had been taken care of.

The outside balcony was perfect for sitting and eating during our staying and it has a wonderful cooling breeze!
The surrounding gardens and pools of the property were stunning. Extremely well looked after and exceptionally clean.
Stunning views of the surrounding area and of the sea. Perfect for swimming, the club house with infinity pool has wifi and satellite television.

Outside of vumount, the location of speightstown is easy to find as it . Both locations offer wide variety of restaurants, holetown having many authentic bajan shops and superb location of lime grove..

As all beaches are public you were spoilt for choice as which one to visit. The nearest to vumount being that of Port St Charles was simply stunning, easy to access and was never crowded.

Our stay here was the best holiday we have ever had and we are planning our return visit for next summer. Only this time we will be staying longer...
