Home description
The Castle is a small Castle with a tower. It was built in the 12th century and is located on the edge of Umbria and southern Tuscany and is 500 meters from the border between the small village Petrignano del Lago (Umbria) and Valiano (Tuscany). The area offers excellent sight seeing at Lago Trasimeno (Italy’s 4th largest lake) Lago di Montepulciano and Lago di Chuisi all with a 10 km radius of each other.
The Castle really is a dream come true for the owners who renovated the castle from its derelict state. The property boasts breathtaking views of both southern Tuscany and the rolling plans of Umbria and there is now a brand new pool measuring 5x10 meters.
Surrounded by vineyards, sunflowers, and inspirational views of the Tuscan landscape, the owners Antonella and Massimo, former stewards, have created a paradise like haven for themselves and their guests. After they decided to retire from flying over ten years ago, they bought the castle.
The fact that Massimo is an artist will be apparent to you. His offbeat woodwork, sculptures, and paintings enrich the atmosphere of the castle including, of course, the individual rooms. You may visit Massimo in his studio anytime; he will gladly explain his work to you. In the large garden, you can relax under the trees, listen to music or have a barbeque whilst you chat over a glass of regional wine. Early booking for groups are strongly recommended to avoid disappointment.
The historic medieval towns of Tuoro (where Hannibal defeated the Romans) Paciano, Panicale, Castiglione del Lago and Todi are all within easy reach and make ideal morning or afternoon visits. If you feel like exploring further a field you can reach the larger towns and cities such as Assisi, Arezzo, Siena, Perugia and Florence within the hours and Pisa or Rome within 2 – 2 ½ hours.

The Tuscany region
This secret Umbrian idyll is still very much unspoilt and offers excellent transport links to many of the delightful towns and Cities of the region. The location of Lago Trasimeno is excellent as surrounding area offers easy access to some of the most delightful places in Italy; Perugia (40 mins), Assisi (50 mins), Siena (1 hr), Arezzo (45 mins), Cortona (20 mins), Florence (1 Hr), Pisa (1 ¾ hrs) and Rome (2 ½ hrs).
Being large but shallow, Lake Trasimeno (at 128 square kilometres, the fourth largest lake in Italy) is a haven for a wide variety of birds and other wildlife. The lake is surrounded by a flat, alluvial plain, then a ring of gentle hills, where woodland alternatives with fields of sunflowers, maize, vineyards and olive groves. In fact, the economy of the area depends largely on agriculture, together with the local’s love of craftwork, notably the famous lace of Isola Maggiore, ceramics and articles in copper and wrought iron.
Southern Tuscany / Umbrian Border / Valiano area
The Trasimeno area is part of Umbria, but culturally and geographically it straddles both Umbria and Southern Tuscany. It contains features of both, being an area where the borders between the two regions is intriguingly blurred, in a language and landscape as well as in the flavours of its cuisine and its traditions. Umbria is located in the exact centre of Italy, at a point which since ancient times has been a meeting point for routes for travellers from central Italy and northern Europe heading for Rome.
The area is not a busy transit area, however but the kind of place that people stumble upon by chance, then visit regularly. There is no need to stumble across it, though, as now you have your chance to discover this magical region.
