The Tuscany region

A land of Etruscan artifacts, medieval towns, renaissance cities, wonderful food and famous wines.

TUSCANY
DAY TRIP to SIENA – (100km, 1.5 hour by car, trains from Chiusi every 1.25hour). One of the most beautiful Italian medieval towns, with a breathtaking shell shaped square, Piazza del Campo and a gothic Palazzo Pubblico.
DAY TRIP to MON TEPULCIANO and PIENZA, – Start the tour from the marvellous Renaissence city of Montepulciano (40 km from San Casciano) and taste the vino Nobile. From Montepulciano the tour continues to Pienza, a town restored in 1460 by Pope Pius II . On the way back you can stop in Monticchiello and visit La Foce (visit has to be booked in advance), a beautiful estate in the middle of an enchanting landscape.

DAY TRIP to MONTALCINO and SANT’ANTIMO– (55 Km from San Casciano along the Cassia road) A well worthwhile trip to taste Brunello wine in Montalcino! Then, don’t miss the charming Abbey of Sant’Antimo, which was founded in the 8th century by Charles the Great. On the way back you can stop in Bagno Vignoni, a village known for its warm spring since the Etruscan time. In the main square there is a 14th century thermal pool.

HALF DAY TRIP to CHIUSI – (25km, ½ hour by car). If you are in love with the Etruscans, Chiusi has a rich museum, and around the lake you can see evidence of an Etruscan burial site. Guided tours with expert local guides can be booked.

DAY TRIP to ARGENTARIO, on the beach! – (100km, 2 hours by car). Just a day to relax on the beach, once part of the Republic of Siena; in the Middle Ages.

DAY TRIP to AREZZO – (80 km, 1.5 hour by car A1 exit at Arezzo). One of Tuscany's most beautiful and undiscovered towns. Take a day trip and enjoy the culture, splendid monuments and museums, do some shopping and to try one of the very good restaurants.

DAY TRIP to CORTONA– Only 1 hour drive from us. An enchanting town built on top of a hill with astonishing views, and beautiful architecture.

HALF DAY TRIP to SANSEPOLCRO AND MONTERCHI - To see the marvellous paintings of Piero della Francesca.

UMBRIA
DAY TRIP to PERUGIA – (80km, 1.5hour by car). There is a lot to see in Perugia including a visit to the National Gallery. Perhaps take a guided tour.

DAY TRIP to TODI and ORVIETO – (100km, 1.5 hour by car to Todi, 40 km to go back home from Orvieto). I call Todi the Montepulciano of Umbria. A real jewel, with splendid palaces and a beautiful square where there is a restaurant renouned for the past 30 years. From Todi to Orvieto you will drive past a beautiful lake and its natural reserve, formed by the Tevere river. Orvieto is well known and a visit to the well of San Patrizio, to the Duomo, and to the underground caves, is recommended.
HALF DAY TRIP to LA SCARZUOLA – (50 km, 1 hour by car). One of he few convents founded by Saint Francis of Assisi. It has an amazing garden built in 1958 by the architect Tommaso Buzzi, as a representation of the Ideal City. Your visit should be booked in advance, (minimum of 8 people). On the way, you can visit the Castle of Montegiove. The owners of the Castle of Montegiove, (a young half Italian and half Danish gentlemen and his adorable Danish wife), are very hospitable and you can have lunch in their beautiful Castle.

LAZIO
TRIP to LAKE BOLSENA– (70km, 1,15 hour by car). A beautiful volcanic lake surrounded by picturesque villages such as Bolsena and Marta (where you can eat fresh fish). It is very relaxing tour and offers the possibility of visiting other interesting places such as the Ruspoli castle. From Bolsena there are boat trips to Bizentina island where there is a beautiful garden, Giardino della Cannara, and the marvellous Odescalchi castle.

DAY TRIP to ROME – So much to see and do in the eternal city.! A local guide is suggested for those who visit Rome for the first time and wish to know more about its history and Roman architecture.

HALF DAY TRIP to BOMARZO MONSTER PARK – (80km, 1 ½ hour by car). An incredible garden built in the 16th century by an eccentric nobleman who filled the estate with bizarre, surreal statues as memorials to his wife. It is considered to be one of the first Renaissance gardens of Italy. www.bomarzo.net.
