Just outside the apartment begin all of the bars, restaurants and shops of Balham's trendy town centre. Balham has a mixture of high street names such as Starbucks along with independent names such as Harrison's Restaurant and many charming boutiques and cafes. There is a large Sainsburys supermarket, the up scale supermarket Waitrose, independent Organic food shops and Hildreth Street Market. The Bedford Pub, which is THE central community hub of Balham with its popular live music and Banana Cabaret stand-up comedy club is conveniently right next door to the apartment!

Where do you start trying to describe London's attractions? The history, the famous locations and buildings, the hundreds of activities to do, the thousands of shows and events on offer...
Even the 'highlights' depend on what takes your fancy. If you're a 'first timer' to London, of course you must see the Palace of Westminster (Houses of Parliament and Big Ben), the London Eye, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and Nelson's Column, Downing Street, St Paul's, The Mall, Leicester Square, Covent Garden, Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, Harrods, the British Museum...
But where to stop? Take in a West End show? Of course. Do a cruise down the Thames? Perhaps. What about Madame Tussauds? The London Dungeon? The National Gallery? The Tate? The London Aquarium? London Zoo? Hyde Park? Greenwich? Hampton Court? HMS Belfast? Kew Gardens...
The fact is there are many many sources of information on such things, from websites to Tourist Information, so we shall not even try and do justice to London in a paragraph or two here. It is quite simply one of the world's great cities, where you could spend weeks and still not feel you have seen everything worth seeing. It's all up to you, but one thing's for sure...you'll never be bored!
South West London
Balham, 'Gateway to the South' (as it is affectionately known, after an old Peter Sellers comedy) is 'south of the river'. More specifically it is in the South London borough of Wandsworth, near Clapham. Just like neighbouring Clapham before it, Balham has undergone a massive transformation over recent years. This area is one of THE places to live for London commuters, young families and indeed celebrities such as TV presenter Sarah Beeny, and TV chef Ainsley Harriot.
As well as all the coffee bars, shops and supermarkets you might expect, within a mile radius there are also excellent restaurants ranging from Italian to Nepalese, Thai to Persian, Portuguese to Moroccan and the popular 'Harrisons' (part-owned by celebrity chef Rick Stein). There are bars aplenty too, perhaps the best known being 'The Bedford'. Winner of the Evening Standard award for Best London Pub 2002, the 'Banana Cabaret' part of the Bedford is a famous live music and comedy venue that attracts big names week in week out. This is just round the corner from the apartment!
Tooting Common, Wandsworth Common and Clapham Common are all within walking distance. Nearby Tooting Common boasts the UK's largest open air swimming pool and has tennis courts, a children's playground and plenty of space for outdoor activities.
Balham Leisure Centre with its gym, exercise classes, indoor pool and squash courts is a 2 minute walk away.
Major attractions close-by include famous sporting venues like Wimbledon Tennis, Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium and Twickenham Ruby Stadium, as well as Kew Gardens and Richmond Upon Thames.
St. Georges Hospital is also nearby.

"Top apartment in a quiet area"
Our stay at Fernlea 3 was again as of old. Mike and Julie have a stunning apartment. The quality of the apartment is excellent and you'll feel right at home. The apartment is completely renovated and the kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms are top. We could lose our car for the door and there was a friendly staff. The apartment is within walking distance of Balham station, restaurants and park in the quiet but beautiful district Balham. The service of Mike and Julie was fantastic and we will come back again next year with the family. Greetings Rina, Charlotte and Harry
