Spyglass is in the last stages of refurbishment and enlargement and is now a 2 bedroom cottage. For those who have already been - the ground-floor kitchen/dining is now a second bedroom. The lounge upstairs has had the roof raised and is a cosy all-in-one lounge, kitchen dining room from which there are room-width, glass windows with truly stunning views overlooking the River Dart with increased views up and down river, across to Kingswear, and down the estuary past Dartmouth Castle and out to sea. There will also be a small door giving direct access to the roof terrace. We are installing a wood burning stove though this may have to wait till nearer Autumn.. There will also be 4 Velux roof windows giving more views and lots of light upstairs. Insulation is being brought up to modern standards to keep it all cosy. Spyglass is our lovely, quiet, quirky, cosy and cute little hide-away in Dartmouth. The Address is 6 Nelson Steps, Dartmouth TQ69BS. It is up a few steps but it does make it a gloriously quiet location. There is a nice light shower room, 2 ground floor bedrooms one with 2 single beds that can be pushed together as a double, and the other with a double bed. The lounge has flat screen LCD tv/dvd/radio . The whole place is nautically themed. Outside is a small roof terrace with Dart River views with table and 4 chairs. We ask guests to bring their own linen. Duvets and pillows are provided. Parking is on the road during the off season and during the summer season a parking permit is provided with the cottage giving free unlimited parking in the town centre carpark. There are wonderful walks along the coast East and West and Spyglass is directly on the Coastal Path. The town centre with its many and varied shops and restaurants is just 2 minutes walk. River and fishing trips run regularly from the quay side. The cottage is on the Western lower slopes of the Dart and looks down on the Lower Ferry. You can sit on the sofa in the sitting room and watch the fishing boats and yachts coming in, and, in the evening you can sit and see the lights illuminating Dartmouth Castle and track the lights of boats as they come in. We can only usually do short breaks out of season.

The Devon region

Dartmouth is famous for its beautiful scenery, the wonderful Dart estuary, walking, fishing, crabbing, the Royal Naval College and many more unique features. You can approach Dartmouth by road, ferry, and even steam train so access is very good - but as it is well off the main Exeter to Plymouth road there is little traffic just passing through - Dartmouth is a destination in itself. Facilities are very good with a range of eating places from family based to fine dining. Supermarkets range from the Co-op to a Marks and Spencer Food Hall plus small delicatessens. There is a library with free computer use and a small cinema. Crabbing is a particular Dartmouth pastime for children. Walks out to Dartmouth Castle (operated by English Heritage) ,where tea and scones can be had, are particularly popular - though as it is the coast path it leads right around the South West coast. Dartmouth is a place with something for everyone.

South Town

This part of Devon is blessed with a rather special microclimate making it one of the warmest, sunniest parts of England.
