Perfect for a spring or early summer break, stay with us in South Somerset and discover a beautiful, unknown and unspoilt part of England, with tranquil villages full of houses built of the local mellow hamstone.
Avalon Cottage is a detached property located on the edge of the pretty South Somerset village of East Lambrook (home to the 'Margery Fish' cottage garden). It is set in the owners' grounds and has far-reaching views across the beautiful South Somerset countryside.
The accommodation, which was refitted in 2013 to a very high standard, is suitable for one or two people, and consists of one double bedroom, which can either have a superking double bed or 2 single beds (please let us know when booking), with a large fitted wardrobe, a modern shower room with heated towel rail and mirror and a large sitting room with a 3-seater sofa, HD TV, DVD and Internet Wi-Fi. The well fitted kitchen area includes a ceramic hob with extractor fan, double electric oven, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, fridge freezer and an iron and ironing board. The kitchen also has many cookware accessories. There is a dining table and 2 dining chairs, extra chairs can be provided if required. Through French doors from the sitting room there is a conservatory with table and chairs. Full central heating and double-glazing ensures a cosy warm house whatever the weather outside.
5 minutes walk down the lane brings you to the centre of the village where you will find the Rose and Crown, an attractive traditional country pub dating in part back to the 17th century, which has a lovely atmosphere and serves excellent meals at lunchtime and most evenings. Also in the village is East Lambrook Manor Gardens, created by the late Margery Fish, celebrated plantswoman and gardening writer. The Grade 1 listed garden is renowned as the premier example of the English cottage garden style, and there is a tearoom, art gallery and plant nursery in the grounds.
2 miles away is the village of South Petherton with many attractive hamstone buildings where there are numerous shops, delis, churches and the Brewers Arms, another lovely pub. Also within easy reach are Martock, Langport, Crewkerne, Ilminster and Yeovil.
Avalon Cottage is centrally located for a great vacation. There are a number of National Trust properties within a few miles such as Barrington Court, Montacute House, Lytes Cary Manor, Tintinhull, the Treasurers House in Martock and the Priory in Stoke-sub-Hamdon. Muchelney Abbey and Priest's House are also nearby. The renowned 'Field of Dreams' at Barcroft Hall in South Petherton is also well worth a visit. The property is centrally located for visiting both coast lines - to the North you will find Burnham-on-Sea, Weston-Super-Mare, Watchett and Minehead, with the West Somerset Heritage Steam Railway (at 22 miles the longest such in the UK), and to the South the popular towns of Dorchester, Axminster, Sidmouth, Seaton, Lyme Regis and Bridport. Within an hours drive are Taunton, Cheddar Gorge, Wells, Glastonbury and the medieval monastery at Forde Abbey. Bath, Bristol and Exeter are also about an hour away.
The Parrett Trail passes through the village, so walkers will be able to tackle it in both directions - south towards Merriott and Chedington and north towards Bridgewater and Steart.
Cyclists are also well catered for with quiet country lanes, and cycle routes Nos. 30 and 339 pass through the village. Just to the north the Somerset levels provide miles of peaceful easy cycling, to the south it's for those who like more of a challenge! In either direction the scenery is rewarding. Short guided local cycle tours can be arranged, and lockable storage for your cycles is available on site.
Bird watchers will find the RSPB sites at West Sedgemoor and Swell Wood (for herons) a 'must visit', and slightly further away are the large nature reserves of Shapwick Heath and Ham Wall. At Aller Moor you might be lucky and see the cranes which have been re-introduced to the area.
So you can just sit back, relax and enjoy the peace and quiet of this beautiful unspoilt part of the country or explore the many local footpaths, one directly from the property, which will enable you to see wildlife such as deer, foxes, woodpeckers (green and greater-spotted), swallows and buzzards, or even barn owls and kingfishers if you are lucky. Due to its location the sky is big and clouds willing the stars at night are clearly seen and can be quite spectacular.
There is plenty of off-road parking and use of a large lawned area with seating and a BBQ.
Electricity, heating, towels and bed linen are included. As the property is on one level wheelchair/disabled access should not be a problem. Additional information and welcome pack on arrival in the cottage. Please feel free to contact us if you require any further details.
The cottage is suitable for 1 or 2 people, with space for a baby (please bring your own cot). Regret no pets and no smoking.

The Somerset region
We are in rolling countryside on the western edge of the small village of East Lambrook, with its excellent pub, a short distance from the Somerset Levels, and 2 miles north of the village of South Petherton with its good selection of local shops. The A303 trunk road is 2 miles away, and junction 25 of the M5 is 17 miles away (Taunton).
This area is ideal for walking and cycling, there being several footpaths within a few hundred yards, and we are just off national cycle routes 30 and 339, although the whole area is just brilliant for leisure cycling. There is an RSPB bird sanctuary at Swell which is 20 minutes drive away.
The surrounding 20 miles are full of interesting places to visit, many of these are National Trust such as Montacute House and Barrington Court. East Lambrook Manor gardens, famous for its cottage garden started by Margery Fish and now a grade 1 listed garden, is a 500 yard walk away.

"Excellent accommodation with added personal touches"
We were looking for accommodation that would enable us to have a peaceful holiday base while still being within easy reach of local attractions. Avalon Cottage was ideal. The gardens were well maintained and relaxing to sit in and although attached to the owners own property we found it to be a very private area. We were spoilt for choice on where to sit and which garden furniture to use! The cottage was very tastefully furnished to a high standard, very clean and had all the amenities that you would require for your stay. All bedding and linen was supplied including all kitchen linen. The local village pub ( just down the road ) was visited on several occasions for lunch and evening meals- we would highly recommend a visit. Avalon Cottage is ideally situated to visit National Trust and English Heritage sites. The Jurassic Coastline is within easy driving distance - we were really lucky to have sunny weather and were able to sit and enjoy the wonderful views. We would like to say a very big `thank You` to Isabel and Peter for making us feel so welcome . The added personal touches of Wine and Biscuits as a welcome gift were most appreciated - not forgetting the vase of Sweet Peas!

"A peaceful and restful escape, and oh so comfy."
Isabel and Peter could not have been more helpful, but at the same time completely non intrusive. The property is in a very pleasing location in the splendid Somerset countryside, and was equipped to a very high order, also spotlessly maintained. Lots to do in the area, including Montacute House and Garden, also garden of Margery Fish - plants woman extraordinaire (just along the lane). Found ourselves being drawn to the village pub, The Rose and Crown in East Lambrook, which was 5 minutes walk away, and served excellent food and beer. Such a pretty golden Ham Stone property, many of which abound in the area. Avalon cottage is a charming location in which to recharge ones batteries.

"Outstanding self-catering cottage"
We wanted a self-catering cottage in Somerset that would provide us with some good opportunities to ride our tandem cycle in preparation for a long tip we have planned for May in France. We were met by the owners and provided with all the necessary information for making our stay enjoyable. We had the conservatory to store our cycle while we are at home and made the most of pedaling through the countryside with all the lovely villages. The cottage is new and superbly furnished with everything that one would want for a quiet and peaceful week's holiday. Everything was there for we cooked all our meals and were never short of anything. The owners were always available just in case we needed anything and were quick to bring over a small heater to help us get our walking boots dry. The cottage was warm throughout and we enjoyed the super-size bed and the spacious layout which is perfect for two people. It is certainly a property that we would use again if we return to Somerset for more cycling which would be a great idea as we got to see only a small part of the county. Highly recommend the property to anyone wanting to see the area and who also enjoys being very comfortable when on holiday.
