The South East England / Greater London region
If it had stayed rural the area would doubtless be termed rolling, and many echoes linger from its pre-urban life in a pleasing array of differing open spaces. Small wonder it has never had a poor reputation since it was dragged reluctantly from its wooded origins.
Forest Hill and Honour Oak possess two very different centres. The former has a well-defined urban heart in the great T-junction of London Road, Dartmouth Road and Devonshire Road (A205 and A2216) by the train station. If Honour Oak has a centre then it is the misleading One Tree Hill, thickly wooded and around which the settlement wraps itself.
South-East London / Forest Hill area
Dulwich and Sydenham Golf Club is a 10 minute drive. Greenwich with its maritime history and Crystal Palace are also within easy reach as are many good restaurants, pubs and shops.
Eateries are few and far between, although the French restaurant on Perry Vale and the Indian on Brockley Rise have great reputations. At the former you can kill time by playing petanque with the chef. SE23's unique claim to fame is its ownership of the Horniman Museum and Gardens. Its stunning Art Nouveau Doulting stone tower and exterior mosaic on the Allegory of Life is something no-one can miss and the exhibits within and without are every bit as exotic and ground-breaking.
The old cinema/bingo hall, long an eyesore on London Road, was converted into the Capitol pub by Wetherspoons in 2001. There is a Sainsburys across the road. Round the corner and opposite the station the Hobgoblin promotes itself with great aplomb, offering bands, theme nights, all manner of drinks, parties of all descriptions and a newly opened net café.
