The Midi-Pyrenees / Lot region
The Lot, rich in its diversity of landscapes and architecture offers authentic values, amazing nature and beauty. As well as the scenery, the region is famous for its food, in particular the Cabecou cheese made from soft and light unpasteurized goats milk. The Lot River winds its way through the wine area extending from the historical town of Cahors 40 kilometers to the west. In addition to vineyards in the valley and on the hillsides, vines have been planted on the rocky Causse (high, chalky plateau). The deep-red wine from the area around Cahors was once numbered among France's most famous products. Full bodied wines have been pressed here since the 7th century.
Souillac / Lachapelle-Auzac area
The area around Souillac is known as Perigord Noir. Here the oak and chestnut foliage turns dark as the sun sets. This is also the home of truffles, the "black diamonds" of French cooking
Above riverside villages, on the Dordogne, rise superb chateaux such as those at Biron, Beynac, Castlenaud and Montfort. Other exquisite villages, such as Salignac-Eyvigues, are guarded by powerful ancient fortresses.
Lesser rivers are overlooked by equally delightful architecture. Medieval Belves, with its seven belfries, perches on a hill above the valley of the Nauze. Little Saint-Cybarnet, with its gabled houses, is washed by the Ceou, as is the even tinier Bouzic. The area also embraces some of the finest Bastides of the department, Domme, Monpazier and Villefranche-du-Perigord, and also includes remarkable prehistoric sites. Souillac Country Club is situated in one of the most historically interesting areas of France. The banks of the river Dordogne have been inhabited since pre-history and the area has played centre stage to many of the rivalries of the middle ages. Key places of local interest include:
Souillac Recognised as the entrance to the Dordogne , it still maintains an historic atmosphere with its crumbling abbey and narrow streets in the old town. As the hub for the Lot and the Dordogne there is always plenty going on.
Market: Friday mornings in Place St Martin and Place Doussot
Rocamadour This cliff-face town has been on the pilgrimage map for centuries, and at one time rivalled Lourdes itself. The architecture and sheer scale is magnificent.
Cahors A town steeped in history, going back to pre-Roman times, with many buildings of interest including the medieval fortified bridge spanning the Lot river.
Market: Wednesday and Saturday mornings in Boulevard Gambetta
Gouffre de Padirac A remarkable natural phenomenom. A short boat ride on an underground river, followed by a narrow passage and an ascent of man-made steps leads you to a vast cathedral-like cavern, the dome of which is over 90m high.
Grotte du Pech-Merle 3km W of the village of Caberets lie these remarkable prehistoric caves. Over 3km of linked galleries contain weirdly shaped limestone formations and prehistoric paintings, drawings and paintings of bison, mammoths, horses and outlined hands.
St. Céré Sleepy town overlooked by feudal castle ruins and surrounded by stunning woodland.
Market: Saturday mornings. Craft fair on 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month throughout the summer
Puy l’Eveque Very pretty Lot village built on hill – famous for its wines. Old houses in golden stone rise in tiers to the church, once part of the town’s defences.
Sarlat Beautiful medieval town with narrow streets, lively café squares and landscaped gardens. Probably the best known town in the region.
Markets: Saturday all day throughout the centre of the town and Wednesday morning.
Salignac and Eyrignac Gardens Salignac commands a very dominant position overlooking the valley. It is also worth visiting the old manor house and landscaped gardens of nearby Eyrignac.
Market: Salignac - Tuesday morning from June to September
La Roque-Gageac Undoubtedly one of the most spectacular villages along the banks of the Dordogne . It has a charming mixture of little winding alleys lined with pleasant cottages, an old manor house, a 20th century château built on medieval lines and a small church set into the face of the rock.
Château des Milandes West of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle. Attractive 15th century manor with contents that belonged to original owners and to Josephine Baker, Folies Bergères star. Interesting museum and regular falconry demonstrations.
