The Campania region
A land stretched out towards the Mediterranean, a land that was painted, described and sung by poets, artists and great travellers of all ages. An alternation of indented and inaccessible coasts dominated by guard towers, pleasant and sweetest beaches, protected inlets and enchanting grottoes and bays.
This land was inhabited and loved by Man since the ancient times: the Greeks had been so fascinated by it to imagine that in these seas lived the Sirens, whose singing was impossible to escape from. Not even the Romans resisted the myth, perpetuating the fame of its thousands of beauties and endless natural resources. They traced there a road that crosses it as far as the extreme end of Punta Campanella and built landings, fish-ponds, nymphaea and thermal basins on the sea to exalt their sumptuous villas, such as that of Pollio Felice, whose ruins evidence its grandeur.
In the Middle Ages and in the modern age, the population, relying on the spirit of cultural exchange, did not fear the Saracens and never withdrew from the sea, continuing to live in the wonderful sea-shores: Marina di Aequa, Marina Grande, Marina della Lobra.
Sorrento / Sorrentine Peninsula area
Close to Punta Campanella and directly south of Termini rises Monte San Costanzo, on the peak of which, visible at long distances by sea-going vessels, stands the chapel dedicated to its saint. Punta Campanella, the old cape of Minerva at the foot of the hill, surrounded by the blue sea so dear to the Sirens who fixed their home here on the "Li Galli" islands, is the territorial boundary of the Sorrentine Peninsula and represents the dividing line between the Gulfs of Naples and Salerno.
On the promontory stood the famous temple of Minerva, where later a magnificent Roman villa was built, the remains of which are still visible, followed in the Medieval Era by a watchtower against pirate raids. Built in 1334, it is older than the other ten towers which stand along the coast of Massa, constructed after the Saracen raids of 13 June 1558.
The tower of Punta della Campanella was rebuilt under the Viceroys and fortified by the French, and the presence of a bell to signal any invasion from the sea gave the name to the entire cape. The promontory is reached by land by a footpath, the old Via Minerva, along which a watchful eye can spot traces of the Roman aqueduct and long stretches of the original flagstones.
The villa is close to the beach (less than 4 km). From Villa Verde you can also start the most beautiful walks of the area with places of interest such as Punta Campanella, the Temple of Minerva, the Bay of Jeranto (one of the most beautiful and suggestive bays in Campania), the beach of Mitigliano, and the Mountain of St. Costanzo.
Easy access with public transport to Pompeii, Ercolano, Vesuvius, Naples, Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, Capri and the island of Ischia.
