The Campania region
Even if you have never heard of this Italian region, we'll bet you've dreamed of visiting it at least once! With Naples as its capital, it is home to the world-renowned Amalfi Coast, the ancient tragic city of Pompeii, and the romantic Isle of Capri (pronounce that CAH-pree, please!). What else is it proud of? Well, if you asked a local, the first thing he would probably tell you is that this is the Birthplace of Pizza, Spaghetti, and Buffalo Mozzarella. See, we were right, weren't we? You have dreamed of visiting Campania! Back in the 18th and 19th centuries, no self-respecting Northern European aristocrat would dream of leaving Italy without spending a month or so in Naples. But then, after the Unification in 1870, the city fell into ill repute and, all during the 20th century, it was considered dangerous and depressing. This wonderful harbor, once the third largest city on the continent, still has some less-than-picturesque neighborhoods, but the entire historic centre was extensively restored in the '90s, and today we think it is one of the most interesting locations Italy has to offer. After all, what we foreigners usually remember best about our Italian vacations is the people, the lifestyle, the local colour and the food - and nowhere on the peninsula are these ingredients present in such undiluted quantities as in Naples. From dawn to midnight, the cobblestone streets are alive with the vibrant, larger-than-life type of characters we all first encountered in the films of a local girl called Sophia Loren. The city offers ornate Baroque churches, a world-class Royal Palace, two massive fortresses and a pair of superb museums - all of which we highly recommend you see - but truly, the #1 Tourist Attraction in Naples is its streets, its shops, its little restaurants, its breathtaking bay, and the wonderful people who call them home. When you have finished your own Grand Tour of the city, set out along the coast to discover Europe's scariest road, which will take you to Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, Ravello and Vietri (the ceramic lover's mecca). Or you can take the easy way out and travel there by ferry or hydrofoil, from the same docks that take you to Capri, the spa island of Ischia, and Procida, where the locals go for their holidays. Just east of Naples, surrounded by the huge ranches that produce unparalleled mozzarella, is the Royal Palace of Caserta. If you like old-time regal domiciles, most of the experts think this 1200-room treasure trove equals or betters Versailles
Sorrento / Sorrentine Peninsula area
Sorrento, native city of the poet Torquato Tasso, who was born here in 1544; kind Sorrento; Sorrento: land of colours; Sorrento: land of the Mermaids; Sorrento, the city of the orange and lemon groves, etc Each one of these definitions contains the truth because Sorrento is indeed a very pretty little city where kindness and hospitality are a combination that is handed down from one generation to the next. Sorrento, not to be rhetorical, is indeed the land of colours: brilliant or delicate hues depending on the change of the seasons. If you just pause a moment to observe how emotional a sunset can be when you gaze in the direction of Punta del Capo, of Ischia or Procida, the outlines of which can be seen clearly, you will be amazed by the variety of colours and the beauty of the scene. Or look, preferably from the sea, towards the majestic ridge of tuff rock that changes colour at every hour of the day.And then why not leave your mind go back in time so that, with a bit of imagination, you can see the nimble Greek ships ride the waves and Ulysses bound tightly to the main mast to listen safely to the dangerous song of the mermaids .... or follow the wake of the Roman ships laden with merchandise and busy sailors, or look around the wonderful palaces that the Roman emperors built on our coasts, among the most beautiful in the world. Today Sorrento is a modern city with over one hundred comfortable hotels; it is the home of a prestigious and rich Museum (Correale of Terranova), that contains important testimonies of both the history of the city and of the purest craft tradition of inlaid wood. Sorrento hosts important events in the fields of culture (International Prize Award "City of Sorrento" for science), music (Sorrentine Summer Musical Festival), cinema (International Film Festival), as well as the ideal starting point for visiting to all the tourist sights of the area (Capri, Ischia, Naples, Ercolano, Pompei, Positano, Amalfi) and so... …Welcome and Enjoy your Stay!!!
