The Campania region
Sorrento Sorrento is situated in a naturally strong position, on a tufa rock rising 50m above sea level with deep ravines on three sides. Originally called ‘Surrentum’, the first known settlements were those of the Phoenicians in the 7th century BC, followed in succeeding centuries by the Greeks and Romans. The early stages of the Roman Empire were a particularly prosperous time for all the Sorrento Peninsula, when Augustus and Tiberius brought fame to Capri. Many rich Romans had villas built for themselves, especially on the coast facing the Bay of Naples. The Romans visited Sorrento because of the beautiful scenery and climate but it was never thought of as being an important town. As the empire crumbled the barbarians began to invade. From about 550AD the Byzantine Empire took control of the coastline, and their rule lasted until the arrival of the Normans who in the 11th and 12th centuries became masters of all Southern Italy. From 1443 to 1503 it was the turn of the Kings of Aragon, and the local population, though at first hostile, was forced to accept their political and military strength. In 1503 Southern Italy came under Spanish rule and for several decades was repeatedly attacked by the Saracens. These were harsh times of economical, political and social decay, aggravated by various natural disasters, such as the tidal wave which damaged the whole coast, and the plague in 1656, which claimed the lives of over 2,000 people on the Sorrento coast. It was a time of extreme poverty when maritime activities came almost to a standstill, and land communications were virtually non-existent. The 18th century saw the accession of the Bourbons to the throne, and an economic and cultural revival. In 1832 the road was built from Castellamare to Sorrento, and in 1857 the Amalfi coast was developed. Such achievements were vital for trade and tourism. In 1860 the Bourbon rule ended and a year later Italy was united into a single Kingdom. The social scene of those times was little different from that of today: agriculture, tourism, artisan work and commerce were and still are the main activities in the area.
Sorrento / Sorrentine Peninsula area
The Old Walls The only part of Greek defensive wall still remaining is under the road at the Porta Parsano Nuova and can be viewed nearby. Another smaller part of the Greek wall (other than of the Marina Grande Gate) is the small tract of the western end located in Via Sopra le Mura. The Roman town was built over the Greek one following the same urban plan, with walls of large isodomic blocks. These walls stood to defend Sorrento through the Middle Ages. Rebuilding began in 1551 and was only completed in 1561 after the tragic Turkish invasion.
Sedil Dominova This is the only remaining evidence in Campania of the old noble seats and dates to the 16th century. It has a quadrilateral form with two corner arches in lava permitting the view of the interior of the cupola. This one is formed by green and yellow majolica ceramic roof-tiles.
Basilica of St. Antonino Interestingly, this church features various plundered elements such as the column shafts which, given their uniformity, probably come from one of the many Roman villas in the area. In the crypt, rebuilt in the 1700s, are numerous ex voto paintings mainly of sailors.
Cathedral In Romanesque style, it dates to the 15th century. Among other things the church contains paintings from the Neapolitan school of the 1700s, an archibishop’s throne in fine marble and much wooden marquetry work of Sorrento craftsmen from the beginning of the 19th century.
Cloister of St. Francesco The monastery dates to the first half of the 8th century. The cloister's architecture, featuring crossed arches carved of soft tufo stone on two sides of the portico, is typical the late 1300s style and is replicated on the other two sides by round arches.
Museo Correale The museum is housed in the 18th-century Villa Correale, surrounded by a magnificent citrus grove and with a terrace rising steeply above the sea. The exhibits, displayed on three floors of the villa, include paintings from the 17th to the 19th centuries and a wonderful collection of 18th-century Italian and European decorative china pieces. Many archaeological finds from excavations in the Sorrento area are also on display.
