The Menorca region
Menorca is an island of 700 sq kilometre surface and a coast length of 200 km. It is divided into eight municipalities with a steady population of 85,000 inhabitants. Tourism has become over the past decades its main economic resource: this fact explains seasonal population variations with peaks as high as 160,000.
Menorca is the most northern and most eastern of all Balearic islands. Its shape is long and slightly rectangular, with a maximum length og about 53 km. The landscape is gentle undulated: its highest point is 358 m (el Toro).
UNESCO declared Menorca a biosphere reserve the 8th October 1993 taking into account the high compatibility between the island economic activities, the use of resources and the preservation of its landscape and inheritance, both of an exceptional quality. Menorca is a highly domesticated territory with a rural landscape with different and remarcable mediterranean habitats where live unique animals and plants, some of them in danger of extinction.
The island's talayotic settlers are the most important of Europe. The creators of these mysterious works seem to be giants if one bears in mind the size of the stones used in their different buildings. We can travel back, along the mysterious paths totally integrated in the natural surroundings, thousands of years while observing the splendour and size of the "taules". These monuments, which where supposed to be sanctuaries during the period they were built, are formed by two large rock slabs resembling a T and receive their name from "table" ("taula" in the Minorcan dialect). The tallest is the one at Trepucó measuring 4,20 metres.
Minorca is a magnificent island, not for its extension, but for its great variety of Mediterranean landscapes where exclusive species of the island cohabit (plants and endemic animals). The country landscapes are scaled to man's size, the purity of the natural environment, to which the natives have learnt to adapt with harmony, has been preserved. This compromise with its surroundings has taken its inhabitants not only to preserve it, but also enhance its beauty with typical constructions blending in with the environment. And so it has been maintained, through out years; a pure state of beauty: a landscape without artificial colourings or preserving; an authentic reservation of beauty where we can let ourselves go among surprising sensations offered by the Albufera Natural Park ( a paradise for migrating birds, fish and reptiles), five natural reservations, a marine reserve and nineteen A.N.E.I. areas (Natural Areas with Species of Interest).
