The Balearic Islands region
Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic islands, the most popular and best known. It is often likened to a continent rather than simply as an island due to its variety in culture, history and natural landscapes, it isn't surprising that the sheer beauty of the island captivates everyone who visits. No other European island boasts a more contrasting terrain from the fertile plains of the centre to the almost Alpine peaks of the Tramuntana Mountains in the North/West and across to the gentle hills of the Levante on the East coast.
You could visit a market everyday of the week in Mallorca if you were so inclined. The majority are in the mornings between 8 – 1300 hours and vary from daily produce, leather and handicrafts. The largest market on the island is in Inca on a Thursday and the most traditional is in Sineu on a Wednesday morning, Sineu is an old farming town and you will find livestock, fruit and vegetables, home made cheeses and sobrasada (mallorcan liver sausage). The small villages throughout Mallorca have some delightful markets. Pollenca on a Sunday morning is well known for its lace and handicrafts set in one of the largest squares on the island with its maze of cobbled streets with delightful shops selling jewellery, leather and pastries. From the square you can walk up the 365 steps to the Calvari Church from here the views of the Bay of Pollenca and the plains of Mallorca are quite amazing
Mallorca justifiably claims to cater for all tastes from fun and sun seeking holidaymakers, walkers, cyclists, golfers, painters, photographers to jet setters and film stars wishing for anonymity on discreet, yet exceptionally luxurious mountain hideaways.
Located in the Northwest of the island of Majorca, in the very centre of the Bay of Alcudia, the biggest bay of the Balearics, with 17 kilometres of beach. Preserved areas of woods extend towards the east, with only two small villages and hardly any tourist development. At this end of the bay is Cap Farrutx, one of the most beautiful areas of the island, with cliffs and pine groves of difficult access by car, but not by boat or hiking.
Toward to the interior, cultivated fields surround the village of Santa Margalida, the original nucleus of the population of the municipality.
The distance to Palma is 54 km, half of which, approximately, is a motorway, crossing the whole island right through its middle.
You can arrive to Can Picafort by public transport from the bus+train station Plaza España. By bus (line 390) and by train (to Muro with conection to Can Picafort). Can Picafort is located right in the middle of the biggest bay in the Balearic Islands, between two natural parks and long white sand beaches which are ideal for hiking.
