The Languedoc-Roussillon / Gard region
Languedoc-Roussillon is one of the most sought after holiday destinations in France, due to a combination of it's proximity to the Mediterranean resorts, and the historic sights and Roman monuments in the area. In fact there is more to do and see here, than in neighbouring Provence! Languedoc offers a range of sightseeing options including historic monuments, natural wonders, museums, beuatiful towns. Of particular interest are the Arenas in Nimes, along with all the Maison Carrι and roman baths, The Camargue with it flamingoes and horses, The famous Roman Pont du Gard, and beautiful towns in Uzes and Avignon. There is also a massive selection of beaches, shopping and dining in Montpelier, and rock concerts and festivals all through the region.
Sommieres area
Weekly Saturday market must be visited. Regular events are held in the Arena. A big attraction is the medieval festival in April. The medieval tower and 17th century Castle in the heart of the town are open for public viewing. To appreciate the surrounding views you can walk up to Vilevielle and sit among the ruins over looking the region, and also the Viewpoint of St Loup just by the villa. Other activities in area include Fishing, Horse Riding, Paint Balling, Cycling, Canoeing and Kayaking. We recommend dining at The Auberge Du Pont Romain (famous for it's Foie Gras and desserts made to order!!)
How to get there
Very cheap flights available from ryanair.com that fly to both Montpellier and Nimes airports, noth of which are under 30km from the house. Car hire is available at both airports.
