About the home

Charming house in quiet, leafy suburb of Somerset West with views of the Helderberg and sea. Lovely, private outdoor areas on balcony and courtyard to catch the sun or cool down in the pool. Interesting garden with small herb and vegetable garden to pick your own fresh herbs and salad leaves. The house on three levels has three en suite bedrooms and comfortable open plan living with a separate TV(DSTV) lounge with a cosy log fire or aircon and secure garage with internal access. Wifi available and kitchen well equipped with new appliances. Within a 10km radius you can visit the beautiful Strand beach, top wine farms for wine tasting, shop at organic and local markets on Saturdays, walk in the Helderberg Nature reserve, play Golf at a choice of 3 clubs, eat out in many excellent restuarants. The historic university town of Stellenbosch is 21 km away along a road with breathtaking scenery all the way. Sailing and other watersports available in Gordons Bay (17km) and Cape Town. Cape Town International airport is 35km away and wonderful Cape Town with all its attractions is only 45 minutes away. Garden and pool maintained.

Please note there are a number of stairs in the house and garden which is why i have said it is not suitable for children.

The Western Cape region

Somerset West is in the heart of the Western Cape winelands in the Helderberg basin surrounded on three sides by spectacular mountains and the third False bay with a beautiful long white sandy beach stretching from Strand to Gordons Bay. Historically it was a farming village but has grown considerably as many people are drawn to the beautiful area to retire. Many foreigners have also made it their second home. It has a mediterranean climate with most of the rain falling in the winter. Summers can be extremely hot - perfect to be on the beach but fortunately there are cool days too. Winter can be wet and grey - the ideal time for relaxing around a cosy fire or getting out and doing some wine tasting and sampling the excellent fare in the many restuarants from organic, vegan to speciality fish or meat - many of which serve local seasonal produce. Spring brings the spectacular fields of flowers locally and further afield up the west coast.

The Somerset West / Parel Vallei area

Many of the world's top wines and olive oils are produced within a 45 minute drive and visitors are welcomed to visit the farms and taste. On most weekends there are wonderful markets showcasing foods and crafts of the local farmers and craftspeople. The historic university town of Stellenbosch is 30 minutes away. Whales can be seen from the shore in Hermanus(80km) from July to November and in False bay from Muizemberg to Fish hoek (45km). There are different festivals celebrating olives, whales, wine, flowers, music, Christmas and strawberries at different times during the year. The Helderburg nature reserve is wonderful walk or cycle to enjoy the unique and spectacular fynbos and birds. Of course Cape Town with Table mountain newly proclaimed as one of the new 7 wonders of nature of the world is a 45 minute drive away. The Atlantic Ocean which you look out onto is cold and refreshing in summer and warmer in the winter months. There are wonderful Kelp forests for you to investigate while scuba diving or maybe you would like to try shark cage dives? If diving is not your thing - the Two Oceans Aquarium which will reveal all the secrets of the deep on our coast is one of the must sees in Cape Town.

Fly to Cape Town International Airport either direct or via OR Tambo airport in Johannesburg - depending on where you are coming from there are many major airlines flying to South Africa. There are 4 budget airlines 1time, Kulula, Mango and Velvet air that fly from Johannesburg as well as SAA and BA. All the major car hire companies are represented at the airport. The airport is 35 km from my house - about 35 minute drive.
