The Western Cape region

The Western Cape enjoys a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot, dry summers. The Helderberg region lies within the wine-producing area of the Western Cape of South Africa. It includes the towns of Somerset West, and the coastal areas of Strand and Gordons Bay. The district takes its name from the imposing Helderberg Mountain - Afrikaans for "clear mountain". Located in a nature reserve, the Helderberg itself offers numerous scenic walks, and at a height of 1137m, rivals Table Mountain, which can be seen across the Cape Flats.

Enjoy horse-riding, hiking, or bicycling on your break from lazing on the beach. Drive past olive groves, vineyards and orchards through breathtaking mountain passes to reach secluded restaurants. The region boasts over 200 top-rate restaurants and wine farms that offer a selection of tastings. Alternatively, keep an eye out for whales and dolphins along Clarens Drive on your way to visit the local penguin colony nesting near Betty's Bay. There are also many coastal walks to suit all levels of hiker and coastal caves to explore.

On the rare grey days, spend time in one of the sprawling shopping Malls, at an Art Gallery, or enjoy a show either at the Playhouse Theatre or in the University town of Stellenbosch. Different art, cultural and music festivals take place throughout the year. If the Helderberg region is not enough, drive into Cape Town, only 40 minutes away, and experience all the delights the Mother City has to offer.

Somerset West

The scenic suburb of Somerset West is in a sheltered location at the foot of the Helderberg mountains. It is surrounded by orchards, farmlands, golf courses and vineyards, and is within easy reach of shopping Malls and concert venues. Somerset West was established in 1822 and named after the then-governor, Lord Charles Somerset. This leafy suburb with its well tended gardens is located approximately 45km (28mi) to the south-east of Cape Town. The area has a selection of top rate restaurants and countless wine farms to frequent. It is a golfing, eating, drinking mecca which will be hard to beat anywhere in the world.

Families can enjoy picnics along the Lourens River, visits to the beach, and excursions to animal sanctuaries in the area, whether investigating the habits of cheetah, birds of prey, or crocodiles. Many of the wine farms cater especially for the very young with special menus and additional attractions.

"Fantastic accomodation in the perfect location"

Heide Cottage was perfect for us. The kitchen/lounge is light, spacious and comfortable. It is great to be able to eat just outside on the patio, which we did every morning for breakfast, in the sunsh… More
