The Mallorca/Majorca region
Mallorca is the largest island of the well known Balearic group, set off the east coast of mainland Spain, enjoying a mild and pleasant climate basking in the Mediterranean. An island of surprises and contrasting scenery, Mallorca is much more than just great beaches, fun bars, good restaurants and lively nightlife. Although all those essential ingredients for a marvellous holiday are certainly present, there is also a lesser known Mallorca which is typical, traditional and quite delightfully hidden.
Soller / Port of Soller area
This part of Mallorca will appeal to those looking for a quiet and peaceful relaxing holiday.
The main town Soller, is of Moorish origin, and is famous for the orange and olive groves that abound in the area. From the train station, you can take the famous old wood train which still rattles its way to Palma and back several times a day and is a wonderful journey and well worth the time.
Also from the station, the historic electric tram runs through the square to the Port of Soller, a beautiful, almost circular well protected bay. From here you can take a boat along the wild, rugged northern coast to sheltered little bays inaccessible by road, why not stop off for a romantic picnic? Around the bay are a good number of small restaurants and shops.
Nearby are the attractive mountain villages of Fornalutx and Biniaraitx, whilst a little further along the coast is Deia, an area of musicians, painters, poets and artists who have for many years found inspiration here.
