The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Landes region

Aquitaine: a region of rivers, lakes and forest and boasting of having the longest beach in Europe, 270 kms, of golden sand stretching from Biscarrosse in the north to the foothills of the pyénées in the south. Holiday makers are attracted to its wealth of activities from water sports, walking, cycling or just to relax in the warm summer temperatures.

The Spa town of Dax is renowned for its therapeutic healing in the hot water springs and warm mud baths. The most famous of these is a warm water fountain known as the Fountain of Nehe, where the Romans came to recover their health and relax. With a discharge of 2600m3 of spring water at 63 degrees, it is the largest source of hot spring water in France.

The forest, designated a regional natural park is a treasure trove of flora and fauna including 270 species of migratory birds in the Teich Bird Reserve. The main rivers of the region are la Garonne, l'Ardour and la Leyre

The local cuisine of foie gras, confit de canard and magret de canard should not be missed. Nor should the locally farmed oysters and mussels from the Bassin d'Arcachon. You must try oysters, seasoned with lemon juice and washed down with chilled white wine before leaving the region.

Solferino area

Solferino is situated in the heart of the pine forest of Les Landes. The forest is entirely man made having being planted in the 19th century as a way of taming the vast stretches of sand and swampland. In the space of 50 years the old moorland landscape with its wandering flocks of sheep watched over by the famous stilt walkers had given way to a rich growth of maritime pines.

The forest has now been designated a regional national park and its treasure trove of flora and fauna including more than 270 species of mirgratory birds in the Teich bird reserve.

The Domain Imperial de Solferino was instigated by Napoleon III about 1860 as part of the rehabitation and land developement. The village was named after his victorious battle in Solferino, Italy in 1859. The church in the centre of the Imperial village is dedicated to Empress Eugenie, Napoleon III's wife.

Places of Interest: Ecomusée de la Grande Lande in Sabres where a delightful 10 minute train journey into the forest takes you back in time to see the working history of Les Landes.

Things to do:
- There are at least 4 fine golf courses within an hour's drive of the house.
- There are two adult mountain bikes and one child's bike for hire - please request details
- There is sailing and boating on the lake at Biscarrosse - the beach there is ideal for small children and picnics
- The holiday town of Mimizan is 35 minutes
- The riot of colour in the forest in spring and autumn painters cannot help but be inspired
