Further details indoors:
The interior is modern and contemporary with a palette of colours, plants, pictures and furnishings that is warm, welcoming and wonderfully relaxing. The house has all high quality furniture and appliances and is superbly equipped. The interior is bright and spacious, designed to provide maximum pleasure and comfort as you relax and enjoy the incredible views of the changing tides, the sunsets, sea and mountains, and observe the variety of wildlife that regularly visits the gardens (we provide binoculars for you).
This is a house for all seasons. Sunshine and brightness stream through the large floor-to-ceiling windows and doors in the conservatory, living room and kitchen/dining area. All these conveniently open out on to a paved sun patio for outdoor dining and relaxation during the summer.
An eco-friendly and very economical geothermal system provides underfloor heating throughout the entire house. All floors, both upstairs and downstairs, are tiled for maximum heating efficiency and the effect underfoot is luxurious. For those romantic nights in by the fire, there is a contemporary wood-burning stove in the living room (we provide baskets of firewood for you) so the house is extremely warm, cozy and comfortable.
High quality Thomas Sanderson blinds are fitted on all windows and doors giving you complete control over light and privacy. These blinds are incredibly slim and discreet and fitted precisely into the rebate of the windows and doors – so they never interfere with the views. The bedroom windows have the addition of Thomas Sanderson black-out blinds. These are totally effective and eliminate all light in the room, so if you need a nap at any time during the day or a chance to recover from jet lag, you will not be disturbed by light or sunshine. And they guarantee a late lie-in!
BEDROOMS:
3 large en suite bedrooms are all spacious, bright, very tastefully decorated and have lots of storage.
Bedroom 1 - Ground Floor with King bed (5ft-153cm). This room has flat screen TV/Radio/DVD player.
Bedroom 2 - First Floor with King bed (5ft-153cm) and Single Bed (3ft-90cm).
Bedroom 3 - First Floor with King bed (5ft-153cm) and Single Bed (3ft-90cm). This room has the addition of an exit door opening on to a large private deck with a breathtaking panorama of sea and mountain views.
BATHROOMS:
There are 3 ensuite bathrooms.
Ground Floor ensuite bathroom has bath with power shower overhead, hand basin and WC.
The two First Floor ensuite bathrooms have large power shower units, hand basin and WC.
There is a guest toilet in entrance hall.
KITCHEN:
The German designer kitchen has top of the range appliances, soft close doors and carousel corner unit. It is immaculately white, fully integrated and extremely well equipped with a terrific stock and selection of high quality crockery, cutlery, glassware and all the equipment you could possibly need. We love cooking and it is a real joy and pleasure for us to cook while on holidays. Therefore, we take special care to ensure that the kitchen has everything our guests could ever possibly need so that their cooking experience is hassle free and successful, whether its bangers and beans, crab or chicken, lettuce or lobster, steaks or shrimps that's on for dinner!
My husband and I put a lot of thought into the layout of the kitchen so we designed it to maximise the use of space and equally importantly, to create the most user friendly work space possible. We don't like bending so hence:- the double oven with turbo grill is at eye level: the raised dishwasher is at elbow level - a dream to stack: the microwave is at eye level: the fridge is raised up: the ceramic hob is touch screen operated - everything is designed for ease of use.
LIVING ROOM:
A wonderfully bright, spacious room with very comfortable modern leather suite, flat screen TV with Sky multi channel, DVD/Radio/CD player. We provide a large selection of books and dvd's for all tastes, and also a selection of music for your enjoyment. Double doors open on to the south-facing sun patio that overlooks a small pond in the grounds immediately surrounding the house and also the natural landscape further afield. The contemporary wood burning stove is a central feature in this room and the walls are covered in stunning photographs of local scenery and original art works by Irish artists.
CONSERVATORY:
Two sets of double glass doors lead from the living room into the conservatory. This is probably the most wonderful room in the house, where you can sit with a glass of wine, relax and enjoy the stunning panorama of views:- the tides changing, incredible sunsets, the weather coming in over the mountains, Sneem Rowing team heading out the bay for training, the glorious array of colours from the natural vegetation - purple heather, yellow furze, orange montbretia, pink foxglove, red berries of the holly, orange berries of the rowan! Make use of the binoculars that we provide to take a closer look at some of the passing wildlife. You will often spot the otters playing on the rocks in the water below the house or watch for the majestic White Tailed Eagles that have recently been re-introduced into Ireland after an absence of 100 years. They regularly fly directly over our house on their foraging route between Killarney National Park and the Kenmare Bay. Please also feel free to try painting some of the glorious scenery - we provide art materials and an easel for your pleasure.
DINING AREA:
The dining area is off the kitchen and is very bright and spacious, with seating for 6 people at the bespoke handmade cherry wood table. Once again, patio doors open on to the south facing patio, that enjoys sunshine all day and provides wonderful views of the gardens and surrounding grounds.
UTILITY ROOM:
Here you will find a Freezer, Washing Machine, Condensing Dryer, Iron/Ironing board, Hoover. There are lots of additional storage units and work top here also.
Further details outdoors:
We built Sneem Secret Harbour in 2007. It is the only house on our 7-acre site and is located on a very quiet and private cul-de-sac, in an area that has only a handful of privately owned houses. It is indeed possible that, apart from the postman, you may not see another person for days.!
The house and gardens are on an elevated site and provide truly spectacular views in every direction. The variety of scenery is stunning - from the front there are uninterupted views of the mountains and the sea that is no more than 100m away. Sitting in the conservatory and watching the tides changing or the weather coming in or the sun sets...it's almost an activity in itself! A natural feature in the area Is the local 'pink' rock and this forms a border around the house, creating a backdrop for the landscaped grounds that are full of native trees and shrubs, along with evergreens - flax, laurel, rhododendron, holly. In fact, there are so many holly trees around the house that it could be aptly called 'Hollywood'! Beyond this are acres of unspoilt natural countryside covered in red sandstone rock outcrops with stands of birch, willow, holly, rowan, rhododendron, furze, ferns and heathers that provide glorious colour all year round and give home to a wonderful selection of wildlife which you can observe, sometimes up very close! and especially first thing in the morning (binoculars provided) - paradise for bird-watchers and nature lovers.
The kitchen and dining area, living room and conservatory all conveniently open onto the paved sun patio that runs along the entire rear of the house. It is south facing and enjoys sunshine all day. Lots of patio furniture is provided so that you can take full advantage of the fine weather, and a gas BBQ is available, if required.
There is a large first floor deck that is accessed from Bedroom 3 and also by means of an outside stairway at the rear of the house. Up here you can enjoy absolute peace and tranquility along with the spectacular views of the grounds and surrounding sea and mountains. This deck area is totally private - a perfect place for reading or painting, enjoying a coffee in the morning sunshine or a quiet relaxed drink in the evening.
Oysterbed Harbour, with its sailing yachts and fishing boats, variety of wildlife and magical scenery, is less than a 10 minute stroll from the house. This is an idyllic spot for a swim or some tranquil fishing, or a place to just sit and watch for the seals and dolphins and enjoy the silence! Take a walk down here early in the morning and you're sure to meet some of the local fishermen and, if you fancy some fresh fish for dinner, they will be happy to part with some of their daily catch (depending on what's in season - crabs, prawns, lobster during the summer) when they return in the evening.

The County Kerry region
Sneem Secret Harbour is located just 3km from Sneem village on the world famous Ring of Kerry (N70), unsurpassed for its spectacular scenery and panoramic mountains.
Approximately 25km westwards, you will find miles of long sandy beaches at Derrynane. All watersport activities, including instruction and gear hire, are available here for adults and children. Derrynane House is the ancestral home of Daniel O'Connell, lawyer, politician and statesman. It is now a public museum and a tour around the house, followed by coffee in the tea rooms, is a must.
Kenmare is 24km away, a half hour drive along the beautiful coast road of Kenmare Bay. Kenmare offers a wonderful selection of 5 Star Hotels, Shops, Cafes, Bars and award-winning Restaurants. We highly recommend a cruise with Seafari Ecotours, a 2 hour, 10 mile cruise around Kenmare Bay and islands.
A drive to Muckross House &Gardens in the Killarney National Park (43km) passes through some of the most exquisite scenery in Ireland and provides breathtaking views of the Lakes of Killarney and surrounding mountains. Killarney is a large tourist town and guarantees a great day out.
The Sneem / Oysterbed Pier area
Sneem, meaning "knot" in Irish, is known as "The Knot in the Ring". It is a totally relaxed and friendly village and the ideal location for guests looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Sneem has all the usual services of any small town or village, with lots of interesting souvenir shops, restaurants, cafes, 4 Star hotel and a wonderful selection of traditional Irish pubs (6) that serve terrific food, regular live music sessions and lots of friendly craic! Try D. O'Sheas pub in the North Square where Mary and Gearbhan are always on hand to serve a very warm welcome, a great pint of Guinness and really good food at reasonable prices, served all day long and which you can enjoy sitting beside a roasting turf fire if the weather is cold or on the deck overlooking Sneem River on warm, sunny days.
It is the ideal base from which to explore the entire Iverage Peninsula (Ring of Kerry), the Dingle Peninsula, the Beara Peninsula, West Cork and further afield in any direction.
There is so much to see and never enough time!
OYSTERBED HARBOUR is practically on our doorstep and it is simply stunning. The bay is sheltered and safe, enjoying the benefits of the Gulf Stream and the mryiad of islands are home to some wonderful wildlife - watch out for the residents!... the curious seals, herons, cormorants, oyster catchers and the dolphins that regularly visit the harbour. Also the White Tailed Eagles that have recently been re-introduced into Ireland after an absence of almost 100 years. These majestic birds are regular visitors flying directly over our house and on to Oysterbed Harbour on their foraging route between Killarney National Park and the Kenmare Bay.
The 5* PARKNASILLA HOTEL and Gardens is just 2km away. This is one of Europe's finest hotels and has a rich heritage dating back to 1692 and has hosted many a famous visitor including Princess Grace and her family. Also George Bernard Shaw who described Parknasilla as a place that ‘does not belong to any world that you and I have ever worked or lived in. It is part of our dream world’.
It is a nearby gem that you simply must visit. The marked pathways and tracks that wind through the hotel's extensive woodlands and islands are set amid spectacular, lush scenery. The walks vary from about 30 minutes up to 2 hours and hen you finish up back at the hotel, you can then reward yourself with a drink in the bar or afternoon tea. Use of the hotel's fully equipped gym and swimming pool is available to non-residents as is the luxurious Thermal Suite.
SNEEM and nearby areas offer every kind of outdoor pursuit - Swimming, Snorkelling, Windsurfing, Canoeing, Boating, Fishing, Hillwalking, Cycling, Golfing, Horseriding, Walking, Boat Trips, Painting, Birdwatching - and our house is ideally located for you to enjoy any of these activities. Please do let us know if you have an activity or hobby that you would like to do during your stay and we will be delighted to advise you on what's what and who are the best local operators. We can also help you to book/organise the activities in advance of your arrival, if necessary. And for those wet days..! we provide a large selection of books, painting and art materials, music, dvd's and games. As mentioned above, Pool and Gym facilities, along with luxury spa treatments are available in the nearby Sneem Hotel and Parknasilla Hotel, and non-residents are very welcome.
WALKING:
Walking and hiking are a huge part of the great outdoors in this area. There is an incredible choice and variety of walks and treks. We are very keen walkers - we met hillwalking and got married on top of a mountain! We can suggest some wonderful looped walks in the area. Walking maps are available from Sneem Tourist Office and also from the Geopark Centre in the village, where walking guides can be booked, if required.
The Kerry Way practically passes our door and at over 200km, it is one of Ireland's longest signposted walking trails and also one of the most popular. It passes through some of the most isolated and dramatic countryside and offers a spectacular choice of gentle or rugged routes - from beaches to mountains, short trails to 4 day treks!
Sneem is surrounded by mountains and Ireland's highest peak, Carrantouhill (1039 metres) and the Macgillacuddy Reeks are visible from the deck and are within easy driving distance from the house. Further afield on the Dingle Penninsula is Mount Brandon, Ireland's second highest mountain.
KAYAKING, DIVING, SNORKELLING:
If you enjoy any of these, then Oysterbed harbour, with its myriad of islands, is a truly magical place for all these activities. As mentioned above, the bay is sheltered and safe, and enjoys the benefits of the Gulf Stream and is home to some wonderful wildlife. We are familiar with some of the local Kayaking and Dive centres and will be happy to assist you in arranging classes and/or day outings.
FISHING:
Kerry is a paradise for anglers and you'll be spoilt for choice! If you ever dreamed of catching a salmon, then catch your first salmon while staying with us! We can put you in contact with some of the local Fisheries Managers and help you organise everything - boats, rods, gear, licenses, ghillies, etc. for a perfect day's fishing. If you would like to try some sea fishing, we can recommend some local boat operators who are familiar with the best fishing spots and who will take you out the Kenmare Bay for a truly memorable fishing experience.
GOLF:
Kerry is a golfer's paradise and offers golf courses to cater for, and challenge, every skill level from beginner to pro. Kerry's coastline is studded with links courses offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic, while away from the coast you'll find stunning parkland courses that sit in the valleys between the mountains, so whatever your handicap, or the weather, you'll be blown away... by the scenery!
-Parknasilla Golf Club (12-hole) is the nearest course and only 2km from the house. It is a challenging parkland course with stunning scenery.
-Ring of Kerry Golf & Country Club (17km away) and Kenmare Golf Club (25km) are both top class courses and offer great golf.
-Waterville Golf Club (40km) is the jewel in the crown. This is a stunning course, ranked in World Top 20, and if you're interested in golf, you simply must find the time to play here ....'golf at Waterville is a mystical experience'.
-Killarney Golf Courses (18-hole x 4 and 9-hole x 3) (45km) offer an endless choice of superb, world renowned courses. The Killarney Golf & Fishing Club hosted the 2011 Irish Open.
As you can see, we are ideally located for all of the above and also within daily driving distance from some other world class courses in the south west e.g. Ballybunnion, Doonbeg, Dromoland, Adare, Tralee, Kinsale, Fota.
SIGHTSEEING:
Our house is the perfect base from which to explore and enjoy the beauty of the Ring of Kerry, the Dingle Peninsula, West Cork and further afield! We can recommend some wonderful 'off the beaten track' trips, where you can experience the incredible natural beauty of Kerry and stop for coffee, lunch or dinner in some really great bars, cafes and restaurants.

Our holiday started with a very warm welcome in person from the owners, together with a delicious hamper, well stocked fridge and plenty of local maps and guidebooks which we loved. Our teenager loved the TV, dvds, and reading in the conservatory whilst enjoying the views. Great location for exploring the Ring of Kerry and a short drive to Kenmare with its great shops, restaurants and wonderful food market. |

We had very high expectations of this property and we were not disappointed. The house is very comfortable and superbly equipped. It kept the whole family happy: plenty of opportunities for walks and exploring, reading or perfect for teenage chilling. The house is quiet and private with lovely views but really handy for getting out and about around this lovely part of the world. In one too-short week we packed in quiet, short walks; more strenuous walks up the mountains; riding on the beach (twice!); boat trips from Kenmare and of course, countless visits to Sneem. (O'Shea's is just great). Everyone was so friendly, particularly the owners, who couldn't have been more helpful. A great place to stay. |

We spent a wonderful week at "Sneem Secret Harbour". This house is worth a 5-star hotel. Bedrooms are very large, each with its own bathroom which is very convenient with teenagers. Beds are extremely comfortable. The kitchen is more than generously equipped. The living-room is very comfortable and the view from the "conservatory" is magnificent. The house is very tastefully decoratd, with many wonderful photos of Kerry landscape. The location is very private. You can fully enjoy the beauty of nature but you are close enough to the lively village of Sneem. The particularly friendly welcome of Eugene & Lilly Ross is a another plus, together with all their useful advice. The location is perfect to explore Kerry, go fishing, walking or horseriding. We would recommend "Sneem Secret Harbour" to anyone looking for a top qualitiy accomodation. |
Guestbook for Sneem Secret Harbour
Sept. 2011.
We have stayed in a lot of self catering places in the UK, Ireland, US, NZ and Australia. Yours would have to rate up there as one of the very best. Keep doing what you are doing now because you have the most magic of locations and your house and the attention you pay to little details is superior to most we have seen.
Thank you for the wonderful time we enjoyed there. We will certainly recommend your house to anyone.

August 2011.
This has been such a wonderful week for all of us. Your friendly welcome to such a beautiful house in such a stunning setting, the friendly people we've met and places visited, has provided a perfect week.
A final night at O'Sheas bar must be one of the best ways to bring it to a close, but we love it and would love to come back in the not too distant future.

We cannot say enough about how wonderful our stay here has been. Your home is perfect! So well stocked and comfortable. The kitchen was a pleasure to work in. You have thought of everything. The stocked fridge and the wine was very appreciated. We found your book of recommendations very helpful. Johnny O'Brien took us out on his fishing boat, what an experience! We saw seals and came home with crab for dinner!
Our favourite thing was to sit in the conservatory and watch the ever changing sky. We very much look forward to returning .
Thank you.

Thank you so much for what each of us agree was the best holiday of our lives so far...so good that we have booked in again for next year! The home you provided for us for our 2-week stay was 5*. Every detail was catered for. It was great to have the fridge full of food when we arrived - very welcoming! The boys had a truly brilliant time fishing at the pier - they even caught dogfish and thon back ray.
Thanks again for a truly wonderful holiday.

We have never had so much pleasure to write in a guest book. Ireland pure and attention to detail that is the residence Secret Harbour. We were on Easter 2011 at this magical place and 3 rabbits laughed out at our children from the fridge. In the evening I can recommend a glass of wine with the music collection with a wonderful inspiring view of the water from the conservatory. The kitchen is fully equipped. Right on the Ring of Kerry, you can make excursions in all directions and the holiday was too short to work off all the information provided.
