Waterfields Cottage is a Grade II listed building with its origins going back to the 1600's. Set in five acres of secluded gardens and woodland, this peaceful spot is a haven for wildlife with access to walks straight from the door, including the East Suffolk Lines Footpath. We are located just outside Snape, famed for the Maltings and once the home of composer Benjamin Britten. Our family home is situated at the end of a green lane and bordered by the river Fromus. We are 3 miles from Saxmundham with train links to London and 5 miles from the coast at Aldeburgh.

The holiday let is a 1970's addition to the main house with its own entrance. It has undergone a complete refurbishment in March 2012 and is comfortably furnished with oak floors throughout. The well equipped kitchen adjoins a light and airy open plan living/dining room with sofa bed. There is a well proportioned bedroom with double bed and a separate bathroom with shower.

The Suffolk Heritage Coast has many local attractions and activities to offer, for those who simply want a relaxing break walking along the coast sampling some of the country's finest fish and chips, to experiencing some of the worlds finest performers at Snape Maltings Concert Hall which hosts the annual Aldeburgh Music Festival and the Snape Proms.

As an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty there is plenty for bird watchers and walkers with RSPB Minsmere, Orford Ness, Havergate Island and Dunwich Heath and the attractive seaside towns of Aldeburgh and Southwold. Attractions such as Sutton Hoo, Orford and Framlingham Castles as well as local vineyards and breweries are all close by.

The East Anglia region

The county of Suffolk is a mostly rural county and is part of the region known as East Anglia. It has the lowest rainfall and is the driest region in the UK. Bordered by Norfolk in the north, Essex to the south and Cambridgeshire to the west it is the most easterly county in the UK.

The main wealth of Suffolk came from the Wool Trade in the middle ages but today it is mostly agricultural with most employment coming from the service industries and tourism. Opinion is that Suffolk is fairly flat in parts and characterised by expanses of heathland with a bracing North Sea coastline. However, there are many areas of Suffolk that are characterised by an undulating landscape of fields and hedgerows with small market towns, sleepy villages and pubs that are delightful to explore that make it an ideal destination for walking and cycling holidays. There are of course the wide open skies so popular with artists over the centuries such as Constable and Gainsborough. To this day Suffolk is a preferred haunt of artists for the light that Suffolk skies bring to their work and the home of many artistic celebrities. Suffolk is also famous for its Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, natural history and bird life. It is home to the country's most famous RSPB reserve at Minsmere as well as many others and provides open access to many walks along the coast. It has castles and museums galore as well as sporting activities, such as sailing, golf and horse riding. The UK's national home of horse racing is at Newmarket in Suffolk with Cambridge University just over the border. Suffolk is easy to get to from London, by air from Stansted and by sea from the continent at Harwich.

Sailing and golf available at Aldeburgh and Thorpeness. Thorpeness Meare boating lake-fun for all ages!

Snape Maltings and Concert Hall 1 mile. Aldeburgh Music Festival in June every year with a programme of music and the arts all year round. Snape village fun day in August every year. Aldeburgh Carnival-August.

Aldeburgh and Southwold Summer Theatre-run by the Jill Freud Company.

Suffolk East Lines Footpath runs near the house with access to a wider network of footpaths and walks beyond to the coast.

The county town of Ipswich is 19 miles to the south. The Suffolk Show takes place every June at Trinity Park, Ipswich.

Bikes can be hired in Snape.

"Very quiet secluded country retreat within easy reach of Snape and Aldeburgh"

The property was better than we expected from the photographs, there is ample space for two with a very well equipped kitchen. The property is connected to the owners house but the owners are very discrete but very welcoming and eager to provide whatever is needed. It is a very quiet retreat, a car is needed but there are lovely walks in the area. We would certainly go again.

"Secluded, private, quiet oasis."

We stayed at this little cottage during what must have been the rainiest week in Suffolk's history and found it snug and warm.
It is a modern annex or granny flat attached to a much older farm house, with a separate entrance but isn't overlooked by the main house.You have a roomy living room, well equipped kitchen with dining area, bath with shower and nice sized bedroom in addition to a small entrance hall with closet. It is simply furnished but clean and easy to keep tidy...important as we had our dog with us.

We found the kitchen to be very clean, well-laid out, with everything we needed to cook comfortably.

The setting is a large landscaped garden down the end of an increasingly narrow country lane...don't be put off if you arrive after dark, just keep going and it is on the right. You Will Need a Car! However, there are numerous walking and biking paths directly from the lane. It is a pleasant walk across fields/lanes to Iken (two pubs) and onto Snape Maltings and the Tunstall Forest or over fields to Blaxhall (great church and pub) and Little Glemham. By car, it is very easy to get into Aldeburgh, Thorpeness, Blythburgh, Dunwich

Dining and food: There is a nice farm shop within walking distance that offers (pricey) organic and local food and has a nice restaurant (not too pricey). There are many pubs out there, mostly within biking or driving distance. Sadly, many of them are now poncy gastro-pubs (especially Walberswick!) with prices to match but if you do some judicious looking, you can find the traditional steak and ale pie pub, it that is to your liking.

We found it a great base to explore Suffolk and would definitely go back.

NB: If you find yourself foodless and too late for the pub on Sunday night, there is precious little out there other than Saxmundham's kebab shope (quite good, actually) or Chinese takeaway so be prepared.
