The Marche / Abruzzo / Marche region
Le Marche is a truly special secret. The region is bounded by the Adriatic Sea to the east and the majestic Appenines to the west. It is predominantly a farming area, although many are only at subsistence level, and you will often find local farmers willing to sell produce. The terrain is of gentle hills rising towards the mountains, you will be staggered at the slope of some of the fields that are cultivated. Most of the towns perch on top of the hills and are made from local stone and surrounded by old walls several metres thick. The valley in which the villa stands is blessed with the presence of a large reservoir, which combined with the surrounding wooded slopes ensures that the valley remains greener than most even in the height of summer. This area may not have the quantity of artistic treasures of Tuscany but there are still gems to be found. For example a Crevelli still sits in the church in Monte S. Martino, plus Ascoli Piceno and Urbino will have you gasping at their architecture and depth of history. This area also benefits from materially fewer tourists than its northern cousins, which I hope will only enhance your experience of the area.
Smerillo area
The beautiful town of Smerillo is perched on the edge of a rocky outcrop at close to 900m, it is impossible to do justice to the views from the town. The restaurant Le Logge is acclaimed as one of the best in the area and the town also has a cafe that sells icecreams along with the to be expected great coffee. There are great walking routes from here as well as caves and the ancient town wall and gates to be explored. There is a shaded children's play area. Amandola is only a 10 minute drive from the house. This stone hill-top town nestles against the Appenines. There is a selection of restaurants including the excellent Bella Napoli pizzeria. The Casa del Gelato will keep you busy trying different icecream flavours for several weeks. The old town winds up the hill, affording glimpses into courtyards and cloisters, and again there is a shaded children's play area at the top along with an icecream chalet. Other easily explored towns include Monte S Martino, Montefalcone, Santa Vittoria and Sarnano to name just a few. Local festas include the August threshing festival and celebration, the Theatre festival in Amandola end August and early September and the performances at the Roman amphitheatre in Falerone during July. There is a continuous stream of other food and harvest festivals throughout July and August in the area advertised through posters. Fabulous Autumnal festivals include the Castagnata (Chestnut) in Smerillo in October, famous for miles, and the gastronomic heaven of the Truffle festival in Amandola in November.
Horse riding, bird watching, hiking and rambling are among the many activities on offer.
How to get there
Casa Civetta is 1.5hrs from Ancona or Pescara airport. Ryan Air fly to both. There is a good choice of car hire companies that operate in these airports. I normally compare prices between a few agents when booking my car. I check Hertz through the www.ryanair.co.uk website, plus www.holidayautos.co.uk and www.all-inclusive-car-hire.com. The journey takes you along the coast and then inland through rolling hills and fields of sunflowers towards the mountains. Sometimes flights to Rome (3hrs) and Bologna (3hrs) can be attractive especially if you want to add a stop-over. British Airways, EasyJet and Ryan Air fly to these airports.
