At the foot of the South Downs amongst the wooded southern slopes, Slindon is a haven for walkers. This beautiful village is surrounded by beech woods, open downland and farmland that form part of the Slindon Estate. Much of the village and surrounding landscape are under the care of the National Trust ensuring a balance between tradition and practicality for visitors and villagers alike.
Macaulay Cottage enjoys an enviable position right in the heart of this charming village. Being slightly elevated it has wonderful views south towards the Sussex coast from the upper floors, while also enjoying a peaceful outlook over the patchwork of village gardens and allotments. It has a real country cottage feel offering accommodation over three floors. Although there are three bedrooms, the cottage is best suited for either a maximum of four adults or a family of six where there are younger children.
The cosy sitting room is partly open plan with the kitchen and dining room making an enjoyable social space downstairs. Double doors open onto the patio garden with a raised eating area, a pleasant and private sun trap. A downstairs cloakroom is also conveniently located off the patio.
Upstairs there are three bedrooms. The principal bedroom is on the top floor. It is fitted with a king size bed and makes the most of the views to the coast. This is certainly a view to wake up to each morning! Being duel aspect it is a wonderful bright and airy room. The second and third bedrooms are on the first floor. One is fitted with a standard double bed to the front of the cottage while bedroom three has adult size bunk beds which given the size of the room would suit younger children. Also on the first floor there is a family bathroom with a bath and shower attachment above.

The West Sussex region
Arundel Castle is the seat of the Dukes of Norfolk, and is set in 40 acres of sweeping grounds and gardens. The castle has been seasonally open to visitors for almost 200 years. It is one of the great treasure houses of England, and is home to priceless works of art in stunning rooms. Climbing the 131 steps to the Keep, which dates from the 11th century, to take in the views over Arundel and The South Downs is definitely worth the effort.Five miles to the west of the cottage is Chichester, the cathedral city of Sussex. It is one of the great well-preserved Georgian cities in the UK that has played a key role in the affairs of Sussex since at least Roman times. The city's broad streets are packed with Listed buildings, headed by the towering presence of the cathedral. In the late spring and summer the cathedral spire is home to a family of peregrine falcons who swoop over the city at duskThe city centre is neatly enclosed within the ancient city walls, which helps to make Chichester compact and pleasant to explore on foot. It is a cosmopolitan, vibrant and friendly city proudly combining two thousand years of heritage with a lively lifestyle.Chichester is also home to the famous Festival Theatre. It is renowned for its quality of productions, as well as featuring many world premieres. We have a link to the theatre from our website under 'What's On'.
Slindon is a village you just want to stroll around and enjoy. Most of the village is managed by the Slindon Estate which is itself owned by the National Trust. As such there is a strong emphasis on maintaining the tradition and resisting unnecessary change. The Slindon Estate extends to over 1400 hectares where there are over 30 miles of rights of way that criss-cross the estate to explore. Part of that is Stane Street, the Roman road linking London with Chichester offering a particularly picturesque walk through the woods from Eartham to the top of the South Downs at Bignor where you meet the South Downs Way. Slindon is a convenient mid way spot between Arundel and Chichester. In addition to being in the perfect location for the premier motorsport events at Goodwood each year, Macaulay Cottage is also within a mile of Fontwell Park Races a unique figure of eight track and a jewel for West Sussex. Right next to Fontwell is Denmans Gardens a delightful four acre garden that is full of ideas for the keen gardener. The beaches at Climping and Bognor Regis are within five miles. Climping is a beautiful unspoilt length of beach of Special Scientific Interest. At its eastern end, beside the mouth of the River Arun, is the West Beach Caf' built by local craftsmen using materials sourced locally. It is worth a visit, the fish and chips do come highly recommended!Further west Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve is another area of outstanding natural beauty and a place of special scientific interest. The harbour has a small entrance to the sea so remains tidal and has extensive walks that link Bognor Regis and Aldwick in the east with Siddlesham and Selsey in the west.A short distance to the east from Slindon, Arundel is a historic market town, dominated by the symbolic castle and the rising spire of the cathedral. It offers a plethora of craft and antique shops, as well as restaurants and tearooms. It's a great place to wander and just enjoy the hospitality on offer there.
