The Island of Malta region
From its North African and Arabic influences (listen carefully to the local language) to the Sicilian-inspired cuisine, Malta is a microcosm of the Mediterranean. Few European countries have such concentrated history, architecture and, yes, beaches in so tiny an area.
There’s been an eclectic mix of influences and a roll-call of rulers over the centuries, but be in no doubt: Malta is not just a notional outpost of Italy or a relic of colonial Britain. This island nation (all 316 sq km of it, comprising the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino) has a quirky character all of its own.
From prehistoric temples, to the baroque architecture of Valletta, feasts of rabbit to fiestas of noisy fireworks, rattling buses to colourful fishing boats, this nation has loads of unique charm.
The resort of Sliema is located on the Malta’s east coast 5km north of Valletta by road and just 0.5km by ferry
Sliema occupies a peninsular with sea fronts on ‘The Strand (Ix-Xatt)’ facing Marsamxett harbour, Valletta, Sliema Creek & Manoel island or ‘Tower Road (Triq It-Torri)’ and the open Mediterranean sea
Transfer time between Luqa airport and Sliema is between 30 minutes to 1 hour, as always depends on local traffic.
Sliema is the main coastal resort on Malta, and it also has a large residential area. For holidaymakers who like a little sightseeing whilst on your holiday, combined with sports and good food, then Sliema fits the bill. This busy resort town centres on The Strand, a broad promenade with views of Valletta just 0.5km to 1km away. Sliema’s is renowned for it’s shops which are among the best on the island - Check them out for Maltese lace, fine silverware, pottery, and woollens. When night falls, the actions diverts itself to Sliema’s bars and restaurants, which are relaxed and mellow in mood with a cosmopolitan feel.
If you stay or visit Sliema then you must ensure you check out the fabulous view of the magnificent fortifications and church domes of Valletta rising high above Marsamxett harbour, from The Strand in Sliema. This is one of the best views of Valletta available and is easily recognisable as Malta’s capital.
As with many of Malta’s seafront resorts, Sliema comes with a flat rocky shoreline perfect for those looking to sunbathe without the sand getting here, there and everywhere. This shoreline makes it great for watersports enthusiasts. Swimming and snorkelling is very popular from the rocks but it is imperative that you locate a suitable exit point from the water, and be aware of the black sea urchins found on the rocks. Bugibba and the neighbouring resort of Qawra are both fronted by flat seafront promenades which are perfect for a pleasant stroll along the front in the cool of the evening after a long hot summer day.
The seafront at Sliema runs from St Julians in the north to near Manoel Island and Gzira in the West. For most of this distance there is a wide promenade with seating, cafes, children’s playgrounds statues and fountains. This is an area which the local authorities have extensively refurbished over the last 5 years making it a pleasant walking experience for young and old visitors to the resort. Please note however that in some areas these facilities are on different levels.
Most of the promenade runs along the busy main roads, Tower Road and The Strand. with several bus routes running along these roads, then if you get tired all you have to do is hop on the bus. Sliema promenade. Besides hotel pools and sun terraces at along the promenade, golden flat rocks are popular with sun worshippers with an easy access to the sea for a cool down in the hot summer months. Mainly overlooks a flat bed rock beach. There are 2 swimming pool lidos and hotel pools towards Qui Si Sana.

"We chose the right place"
First time in Malta and we believe we chose the right place with both Sliema and the House. The accommodation itself is situated behind two new apartment blocks, which provides a bit of tranquillity only yards away from the bustle of the Promenade. Not ones for staying in we didn’t use the kitchen and living area facilities very much, but they are more than adequate for those who wish to do so. The all important air conditioning in the bedroom was very welcome. The only disappointment was the lack of external space, however there are so many other areas in the vicinity for sitting outside. The Hotel Fortina is a 250m walk to the left and has an excellent outside pool area with sun loungers, bar and restaurant and an internet café. Marieneve Attard is very helpful and also arranged airport transfers. Sliema has so much to offer both old and new and links to any number of other locations via the harbour. The other bonus is that during our time there we were lucky enough not to see many mosquitoes. We are definitely returning.

"Lovely, well priced town house in a great location"
This is a really nice property and was perfect for 3 mates as it has two good rooms, 3 toilets and 2 showers. There is also a roof terrace for a cheeky drink before going out. Its situated right next to some excellent eateries on Tigne seafront, and is within easy walking distance of beaches and Lidos etc. The price was very competitive, the owner was really nice and easy to deal with and I would thoroughly recommend this property for your holiday - we really liked it.

"A slice of real Malta"
This property has had a couple of bad reviews prior to it being re modelled. Our experience was very different. The owner was very welcoming and even arranged our transfer from the airport. Myself, my wife and two boys (7 and 10) were visiting Malta for a family wedding, but wanted to make the trip a family holiday as well. We didn't want to stay in another generic hotel, but looked for somewhere with character that reflected Maltese life. This property fitted the bill perfectly. It is located up a quiet little alley just off the sea front. It is just minutes from the sea front bars and restaurants and ten minutes from the new Tiegne Point mall just short walk are the many day cruise and sight seeing boats as well as the sea taxi services across to Valletta or you can grab a bus if you prefer. The accommodation itself is small, but adequate with a dining area and small lounge area with TV, a small kitchen area and includes a downstairs toilet and washing machine room and plenty of interesting ornaments to add to the atmosphere of the property and give it a homely feel. Upstairs are the two bedrooms. Again these are small rooms with the double having an en suite shower room and small wardrobe. The double bedroom is larger and is the only room with air conditioning and also has a larger wardrobe. It also has the small balcony to give views down the alley of the sea. At the top of the property is a further shower room and access to the roof terrace. Overall we found the accommodation of a good standard and an ideal base where you can prepare for the day in comfort and peace. Make your own breakfast and even prepare an evening meal (supermarkets and street vendors are close by for fresh fruit, vegetables and your usual grocery needs). Its not the sort of property where you lounge around all day, but then why would you want to. My main criticisms would be the lack of air conditioning in the double bedroom, which could make it uncomfortable in the summer although we did not need it during our stay. A simple pedestal fan would be useful here. Also I think the kitchen area could do with updating. A new cooker and a few additional good quality cooking pots and frying pan would be good and perhaps a counter top area for food preparation. Also the wardrobes in the bedrooms are a bit dilapidated. So if you want pristine accommodation that could be anywhere in the world, don't choose this property. If you want a more authentic Maltese feel with a property of real charm and know your money is staying in Malta rather than going to some multinational, this is the place. I'm sure the owner will be further improving this property as time goes by, so we should be supporting this kind of enterprise.
Thanks for the review. Very much appreciated. As noted we are always keen to improve and update our property so your points will be considered as well. For future renters, with regards to double bedroom, please note that a fan is available for use in summer months. It is stored in storeroom near washing machine during cooler months. Thanks again for appreciating the 'Maltese feel' we tried to transmit with the home decor.

"Too many stairs... too many lights..."
The bathrooms are the smallest I have ever seen and the double bed is the smallest I have ever seen!!!!! 2 persons can only sleep there if they are from Liliput!!! Air conditioned exists only in one bedroom. Impossible to sleep in summer!!!! And too many stairs and too many lights in the house. The owner threats you: "if you don´t turn off the lights you will pay 100 euros" and there are at least 30 lights in the house, terrible!!!! The only good thing I can tell about the house is its location.
Please note property has been renovated since these reviews. In September 2011 shower rooms have been completely changed to new modern ones utilising better room spaces. Kitchen and dining room completely renovated and bedrooms furniture changed. New aluminium apertures including insect screens have been installed throughout all the property. Please take a look at photos to verify all renovations. Thanks
