About this location
The Yorkshire region
Underhill Holiday Cottage is just 4 miles from the picturesque Yorkshire coastline, it is also on the edge of the dramatic North Yorkshire Moors, littered with attractive villages and scenery.
Though quiet, Sleights boasts two pubs, a fish and chip shop, antique shop, butchers, bakery, post office and hair salon. There is regular public transport to and from the nearby port of Whitby via train and bus.
Whitby is dominated by the cliff top ruins of its 13th century Abbey and famous for its connections with Captain Cook and Dracula. There are many good restaurants and numerous fish and chips shops / restaurants including the celebrated Magpie Cafe.
There is a great golf course on the cliffs between Sandsend and Whitby along with a 5* hotel (Raithwaite Hall) where you can enjoy a pamper day in the spa facilities.
Further to the south is Robin Hoods Bay and the lovely Victorian seaside town of Scarborough (home to the Stephen Joseph Theatre where Alan Ayckbourn premieres all his plays).
A visit to the area would not be complete without a trip to the North Yorkshire Moors (the spectacular scenery was recently featured on Richard Wilson's 'Great British Drives' programme). The NYMR steam railway operates between Whitby and Pickering taking in some tremendous scenery which featured in the popular television series "Heartbeat" and the James Herriot books.
