' in Slapton, on a winding street close to the heart of the village (shop, pub, 150 yards), a charming, 17th cent., Grade II listed, thatched, detached cob cottage. Thoughtfully restored, knobbly walls and ancient beams remain. Behind, a raised, suntrap patio (table/chairs). Door into slate-floored porch (freezer, space for coats/boots/wetsuits), through to smart kitchen/dining room (dishwasher, microwave, larder fridge); shower-room (suite, washing machine); 5 steps up to living room (woodburner, TV/DVD/video); airy sunroom (table/benches) with steps up to the patio. From the kitchen, steep half-turn stairs (unsuitable for people with mobility difficulties) up to two bedrooms ' off the first landing is 'The Cabin' (5'6" lintel), quirky and fun with porthole door and bunks (3', top bunk quite high - not suitable for young children), TV/DVD, limited clothes-hanging space; a few more steps up to large landing (double bed for alternative sleeping - no privacy, washbasin) leading through to the master double (5' bed) with washbasin, sloping ceilings, lowish beams and limited clothes-hanging space. The West Country region

The South Hams: southernmost Devon; between the river Dart and river Tamar and south of Dartmoor, lush farmland and wooded river valleys turning to beautiful estuaries, its coast very beautiful and remarkably well preserved – sandy beaches and mighty cliffs between those estuaries, amazingly little sprawling modern ugliness. Inland too, away from main roads, it remains surprisingly peaceful.

Among special coastal places are Dartmouth; sheltered Blackpool Sands; Slapton's long curve of pebble beach and nature reserve lagoon; the cliffs about Start Point and Prawle Point, Bolt Head and Bolt Tail; East Portlemouth's beach and Salcombe's location and views; Thurlestone proving that family seaside places don't need to be brash; Bigbury's huge sands and the fun of getting to Burgh Island; waterside, oak-wood-sheltered Noss Mayo/Newton Ferrers; many others, less easy of access, are for you to discover.

Kingsbridge and Totnes, both old, attractive and small, are the towns at the area's heart; Plymouth – the West Country's biggest town, with Naval base, ferry port, theatre, cinemas, history, Hoe (great views) and Barbican (where the life is) – is on the area's edge. Dartington Hall is an arts centre (films, plays, music, dance) with lovely gardens. Pleasure cruisers ply the Kingsbridge estuary and Dart and Tamar rivers.

Slapton, Devon

Slapton: lovely village (two pubs, shop, narrow streets, church) on the hillside down to the sea (1 mile). There, the long lake/lagoon of Slapton Ley nature reserve (birdwatching) and Slapton Sands (pebbles, not sand, but multi-coloured and 3 unspoilt miles of them). Blackpool Sands (The Venus Café, Restaurant, Takeaway and Watersports), 4 miles. Superb coastal walks not far. Dartmouth (town) and Kingsbridge, about 8 miles.
