  • Beach / lakeside relaxation
  • Great for children of all ages 5
  • Car advised

½ mile from Slapton, a south-facing, hill-sheltered, very pretty, Grade II listed, detached thatched cob cottage with probably 15th cent. origins. All around is a large, mostly lawned garden, full of primroses and daffodils in the spring, with meadows beyond. Immediately in front, a paved area (table/chairs) with gates to the narrow approach lane and a number of stone steps up to the lawn and orchard (fantastic picnic/snoozing spot) with sun loungers and more chairs.

Inside, typically lumpy, bumpy walls, lopsided low lintels (some lower than 5'), two sets of stairs and slate floors downstairs. Door from garden to kitchen (oil-fired Rayburn for cosiness/hot water, dishwasher, microwave) with table/chairs/benches, handmade units, low beam (5'10"); lobby with toys; utility room with washing machine, tumble drier, freezer, shower-room (suite) and back door; snug living room with stone inglenook (woodburner), TV/DVD and stairs up to three bedrooms – a twin (zip-linkable to 6' double) leading through to a landing with children's little twin (5' x 2'6" beds, limited clothes-storage space) and bathroom (suite) opposite, through to a double (5' bed) and steep spiral stone stairs back down to kitchen. Dogs permitted in kitchen only; no pets permitted from Easter to October. A gorgeous hideaway cottage.

The West Country region

The South Hams: southernmost Devon; between the river Dart and river Tamar and south of Dartmoor, lush farmland and wooded river valleys turning to beautiful estuaries, its coast very beautiful and remarkably well preserved – sandy beaches and mighty cliffs between those estuaries, amazingly little sprawling modern ugliness. Inland too, away from main roads, it remains surprisingly peaceful.

Among special coastal places are Dartmouth; sheltered Blackpool Sands; Slapton's long curve of pebble beach and nature reserve lagoon; the cliffs about Start Point and Prawle Point, Bolt Head and Bolt Tail; East Portlemouth's beach and Salcombe's location and views; Thurlestone proving that family seaside places don't need to be brash; Bigbury's huge sands and the fun of getting to Burgh Island; waterside, oak-wood-sheltered Noss Mayo/Newton Ferrers; many others, less easy of access, are for you to discover.

Kingsbridge and Totnes, both old, attractive and small, are the towns at the area's heart; Plymouth – the West Country's biggest town, with Naval base, ferry port, theatre, cinemas, history, Hoe (great views) and Barbican (where the life is) – is on the area's edge. Dartington Hall is an arts centre (films, plays, music, dance) with lovely gardens. Pleasure cruisers ply the Kingsbridge estuary and Dart and Tamar rivers.

Slapton, Devon

Slapton: lovely village (two pubs, shop, narrow streets, church) on the hillside down to the sea (1 mile). There, the long lake/lagoon of Slapton Ley nature reserve (birdwatching) and Slapton Sands (pebbles, not sand, but multi-coloured and 3 unspoilt miles of them). Blackpool Sands (The Venus Café, Restaurant, Takeaway and Watersports), 4 miles. Superb coastal walks not far. Dartmouth (town) and Kingsbridge, about 8 miles.

Thank you very much for taking the time to send us your observations. I am glad to hear that overall your holiday was a good one but am sorry that there was evidence of dogs having been in the property. I will pass on a copy of your concerns to the homeowner as I am sure that she too will be sorry to hear that you had cause to be unhappy. We don't advertise the property as being suitable for anyone with mobility difficulties, because of the steps, but you are absolutely right in that we are always happy to talk with anyone potentially looking to book a property to ensure its suitable for their needs. Thank you again, I hope that we might see you again in the future.
Yours sincerely, HH
