The West Country / Devon region
South Devon is so blessed with such wonderful scenery and gentle climate, that it's no surprise it has been attracting visitors for over 250 years! The contrast of river estuaries, rolling hills and lovely old towns combined with long warm summers and mild winters make South Devon the perfect year-round holiday destination.
The Slapton, Devon area
Behind Slapton Sands is Slapton Ley, a nature reserve and a good example of serial or ecological succession - the process whereby open water becomes reed bed and eventually, as silt and leaf litter builds up, woodland.
The Sherman Tank.. a memorial to the tragedy of Exercise Tiger. The nearby beach, known as Slapton Sands, was in 1944 the site of the ill-fated Exercise Tiger. A Sherman tank that was sunk in this action has been recovered and now stands on the road behind the beach at nearby Torcross. Part of Exercise Fabius took place a week after Exercise Tiger on Slapton Sands. The beach itself is not sand, but consists of small smooth pebbles ranging in size from ¼ inch to several inches.
Start Point lighthouse was built in 1836 to protect shipping off Start Point in south Devon England. Open to the public in summer months, it is a grade II listed building owned and operated by Trinity House.
The National Trust has many properties to see in this county. Including Greenway - Agatha Christie's holiday retreat.
English Heritage has some very fine castles to see in Totnes, Dartmouth and Berry Pomeroy, along with many other places.

Reviews

We had a fantastic week at higher Whitestone with our three children.. The house is spacious, modern and well equipped. The views are outstanding - you can see about 6 or 7 miles over the south hams, the sea and all the way to the start point lighthouse. The garden is large and secure. With no neighbours but the sheep in the next field our kids were able to charge around to their hearts content. Slapton sands beach is a short drive away. The small village of torcross at the other end of slapton sands has a nice pub and cafes right on the beach. Response: Dear Simon Thank you so much for your review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Higher Whitestone. We hope to welcome you back again one day. Kind Regards Amanda |
