The Sporades/Evia region

Sporades are a group of islands in the east coast of Greece. There are a number of islands in this group and only 3 of them ( the biggest ones) are habited, Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos. They are also named North Sporades as Dodecanese used to be named South Sporades. They belong to the prefecture of Magnesia which is part of the Periphery of Thessaly. All of islands are known for their beauty, green nature and their amazing beaches.
The stunning green island of Skopelos, in the Sporades, is one of the most beautiful Greek islands, and attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world each year, who come here to enjoy perfect holidays in a unique setting and atmosphere.
In the ancient times, the island of Skopelos was actually named "Peparithos", the brother of the islands first King who was the first colonist on the island.
The island is the largest of the three main islands of the Sporades, and is located in between Skiathos and Alonissos.
Skopelos is one of the most popular Greek Islands as it's green and natural setting make it stand out from other Greek islands.
The landscape and the scenery found on the island are second to none, and provide visitors with memories and imagery that they will never forget.
The island has some truly magnificent beaches where you can enjoy the fresh cool waters of the Aegean Sea, and relax on the sandy beaches.
All across Skopelos, you will find a wonderful selection of beautiful churches and monasteries that house some impressive works of religious art such as the beautifully painted icons. These churches and monasteries are well worth visiting if you have the opportunity.
Skopelos is an ideal island for holidays filled with activities and adventure, and here you can take part in a wide selection of water sports, as well as trekking, mountain biking, horse riding and other such excursions that will make your Skopelos holiday all that more unique and enjoyable.
The island is well suited for tourism and travel, and this is one factor that makes visiting Skopelos so enjoyable and relaxing.
The friendly locals will offer you their warmest hospitality, and will help to make you visit to the island very rewarding. Many visitors to Skopelos find themselves returning year after year, to enjoy the unique setting, and truly wonderful holidays and vacations.

During the months of April and May, the islands are carpeted with a profusion of wild flowers, such as poppies, wild irises and freesias. The weather is mainly sunny and warm, with occasional showers, and cool evenings.
The sea is usually cool and warms up towards the mid of May. There is a feeling of activity and excitement as everyone prepares for the summer season ahead. In April, the Greek orthodox Easter festivities are definitely worth experiencing. April and May are ideal months for walking, painting and all special interest holidays.
By June, the sun has become hotter, although the countryside is still fresh and verdant, and there are still flowers to be found. The sea becomes warmer too, and all bars, tavernas and other facilities are functioning. The islands are still fairly quiet as most of the tourists have still not arrived, making June a good time to visit.
From mid July onwards, the islands fill up and August is the busiest month of the year. The air and sea temperatures reach their peak and evenings are warm, although some respite is offered by the strong winds known as ?meltemia?.
By September the islands begin to return to their quiet self although most of the tavernas, bars and clubs are still open, and there are enough people around for there to be a lively atmosphere in the towns. The countryside is still beautiful, as the wild pink cyclamens appear and the bracken and foliage turn golden. The weather becomes a little cooler, and there is an increased risk of showers, especially as October draws nearer, but this is still a good time to swim and enjoy the sun before the winter. Towards the second half of October, tavernas and most other facilities begin to close down.

| Nearest Travel Links | |
| Airport: | SKIATHOS (JSK): 10 km |
| Railway: | VOLOS: 100 km |
| Ferry: | SKOPELOS: 8 km |
The Sporades Islands can be reached from the UK, most major European cities and the US in several different ways depending on which Greek airport is best serviced by your departure point. Below, we have listed the ways and means to reach Skopelos from each of the four airports which have convenient and direct services to these islands:
The easiest way to get to Skopelos is by charter flight directly to Skiathos. Many European countries have charter flights directly to Skiathos airport with a limited number of “Flight only” seats. Charter flights can usually only be booked for 1, 2 or 3 full weeks (i.e. Friday-Friday). From Skiathos there are several ferry and hydrofoil crossings every day to Skopelos (approx 45 min) . Skiathos port is approximately 5 minutes drive from the airport.
Thessaloniki
It is also possible to travel via the 2nd largest city in Greece, Thessaloniki. During the high season there is usually a Flying Catamaran service from Thessaloniki to Skopelos which operates daily (approx. 3 hours and approx. 40 Euro o/w). This service normally runs from mid-June to mid-September. There is also conventional ferry service (6hrs 45 min/approx 35Euros o/w).
Another possibility is to take a private taxi transfer directly from the Thessaloniki airport to the port of Volos (approx 2 hrs and 200E). We can pre-purchase the boat tickets from Volos to Skopelos to ensure availability. Of course a bus may also be taken with the National Bus service K.T.E.L. (approx 2:30 hours and 40E).
From some European countries you can also fly directly into the small airport of New Acheallos near the port city of Volos. By taxi from the airport, you may reach Volos port in approx 20 minutes. There are several crossings a day from Volos to the Skopelos and Alonissos by hydrofoil and high speed ferry which take between 2-3 hours depending on the type of ferry and costs approx. 40 Euro o/w. In addition, Hydroplane service is due to begin from Volos to Skiathos and Skopelos during summer 2010. The flight is approx ½ hour and costs should run approx 60Euro (prices to be confirmed when service begins).
Athens
Another possibility is to travel via Athens to Skopelos . From Athens there are 3 ways of getting to the islands:
1. Domestic flight with Athens Airways to Skiathos (approx. 30 min/65 Euro) and hydrofoil from Skiathos to Skopelos (approx. 45 min /15 Euro) www.athensairways.com
2. Bus from Athens Centre to Agios Konstantinos (approx. 2:15 hours/15Euro) and then hydrofoil to Skopelos (approx. 2:15 hours/46 Euro) and Alonissos (approx 3:00 hours/49 Euro).
3. Private transfer from Athens airport/city centre - Ag. Konstantinos. You may choose between a taxi or mini-bus transfer depending on the size of your party. The pick-up can be from the airport or city centre and takes you directly to the boat departure port of Agios Konstantinos (taxi: approx. 2 hours/180 Euro for 4 people) (mini-bus: approx 2 hours/available for 10-17 persons). Another advantage to these private transfers is that your boat tickets can be pre-reserved to Skopelos (approx.2:15 hours/46 Euro) .
The prices above are approximate and per person for adults.
Direct flights to Skiathos Island from all major U:K: airports, then a 50 minute ferry/hydrofoil to Skopelos Town.
Direct flights to Athens International Airport, onward flight to Skiathos, or taxi to bus station then onward to Agios Constantinos for ferry/hydrofoil to Skopelos Town.
