The Sporades/Evia region

The Northern Sporades are made up of a group of three main islands, Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonissos. They lay North of Evia, and East of the Magnesian peninsular.
The Sporades were originally part of the magnesian peninsular when about 2-3 million years ago they broke away from the mainland and sank into the sea. They now form a small chain of islands known to be quite beautiful and a popular holiday destination for the discerning traveler.
All islands interconnect easily in the summer enabling all three to be visited without difficulty, due to the numerous hydrofoils and ferries operating daily. It is delightful to often see dolphins following in the wake of the boats whilst traveling these waters between the islands.
The Skopelos Island / Skopelos Town area
Essentially, Skopelos Island has one main road linking the two main ports, one being Skopelos Town, the other is Glossa.
In between these two there are small villages, hamlets, beaches and tavernas, all easily accessible.
It’s a very green, mountainous island, and covered in pine forest, reputedly the greenest island in Greece. Off the main road you will find old “donkey tracks” created many generations ago, these usually lead to freshwater springs. The air is very clean, a paradise for walkers, bird-watchers, and indeed anyone who loves the countryside.
The many beaches across the island are clean and picturesque with calm sea, swimming and snorkeling are a pleasure. September 2007, saw the filming of Mamma Mia on Kastani beach, chosen for its unspoilt beauty.
One can take advantage of the small boats for rent to explore secluded coves accessible only from the sea.
Skopelos harbor is lined with good restaurants, cafés and bars, looking especially beautiful at night with lights reflecting on the sea. Behind the waterfront there is a maze of cobbled streets, beautifully presented gift shops, along with shops selling island crafts and local delicacies. Venturing further one cannot fail to stumble upon both beautifully ornate churches and equally beautiful simple churches. The smell of Jasmine permeating the air with the sight of Bougainvillea tumbling from overhead balconies is sure to impress.
Wherever one finds oneself on Skopelos Island, be it the bustle of the harbor front or the tranquility of the countryside you can be assured that the local people will offer a warm and friendly welcome. “Hospitality” is all important to the islanders.
Should you choose “Orange Tree House” for your holiday, we are sure that you will be comfortable and have a wonderful time exploring Skopelos.
