Rather than a farmhouse style this cottage has the feel of your own boutique hotel yet it captures the outdoor / indoor living associated with the countryside. Situated 10 walking strides from the Elm Tree Inn, a renown good food real ale pub, it is also opposite the entrance to the National Park yet is also only 1 3/4 miles to Skipton. The area is easily accessible by train or car.

Lovejoy Cottage is in the old part of Embsay which dates from the 1700's. It has charm and character.

Double glazed throughout, central heating and Electric Everhot 'aga style' kitchen range.

Ideal for a busy walking holiday with comfort or just for a romantic stay or honeymoon

The master bedroom is fully ensuite with a roll top bath, sink and wc and the property has a rear 1st floor balcony (through a snug 2nd bedroom daybed ) features a BBQ and outdoor seating.

The rear balcony catches full sun for most of the day in the summer. This balcony is secluded and has no view.

A second bath shower and wc are also on the 1st floor

We include the cost of electric and gas fuel and provide free for all guests use, the following:

Whats in and around the Village?

Embsay is absolutely perfect if you like your holidays to focus on walking and just north of the village is Embsay Crag, gateway to Barden Moor where you'll find the reservoir and footpaths. A couple of pubs, village shop and postoffice ( Lovely Bacon and Local Eggs sold) , cricket, football and a village hall with jumble sales and pantomimes.

Embsay steam railway, tearoom and award-winning bookshop.Open in the holidays and at weekends, steam trains run to near the 12th Century Bolton Abbey Priory.The Estate offers 30,000 acres of stunning countryside crisscrossed with woodland, riverside and moorland paths. Skipton is a country market town, up in the Pennines, at the southern base of the Yorkshire Dales. It's a small, friendly town with a population of around 16,000. It has history, a castle, cobbled streets, ducks and canal boats. It's a pretty town to walk around, and gets thousands of visitors.

The name Skipton comes from the Saxon word for sheep - the town really began as a trading centre for sheep and wool. The canal came and went, the mills came, and now it's a big tourist centre for people passing through to see the Yorkshire Dales. The biggest employers in Skipton nowadays are HML and the Skipton Buiding Society. Formerly kingsley Cards was one of the main employers but has closed down and the mill converted to apartments.


Skipton 'The Gateway to the Dales' was probably originally just a sheep farm, back before the Norman Conquest. In Airedale, the settlement commanded the Craven Gap, the best passage through the Pennines, and so grew in importance to become the main market town of Craven, and a major trading post for livestock.

The town of Skipton was granted to Robert Romillie after the Norman Conquest, who built the first Skipton Castle, and some parts of the building are still original.

Skipton supported the Lancastrians in the Wars of the Roses, and was on the Royalist side in the Civil War. After the battle of Marston Moor in July 1644, Skipton was the only Royalist stronghold left in the north. The castle was under siege for over a year until December 1645, when a surrender was negotiated.

Cromwell had the roof of the castle removed, but it was replaced just 10 years later, on condition that the new roof was not strong enough to hold cannons. Lady Anne Cliford planted a yew tree in the conduit court of the castle, in 1659, to mark the restoration of the castle. It's still there. She also had the Clifford family's motto carved over the main gateway entrance to the castle: 'Desormais' which apparantly means 'henceforth'. Skipton Castle is well preserved, and a very popular tourist attraction.

"Very Nice Cottage"

We had arranged an arrival time of 4pm but because we had been held up by traffic in Colne we were 20 minutes late and the key holder was not there, and had to ring him he was not very happy about this and we had to wait while he found his partner who had the key. We had problems with the heating, it didn't come on at the set times had to 'fiddle' with it to get it to come on. Pilot light on gas fire was not on, had to get the key holder to light it, we had arrived on the Friday afternoon and were unable to get this done until the Sunday. The kitchen was lovely and warm, because of the gas fired Aga, but this made the sitting room feel chilly in comparison, also not having used an Aga would not have liked to spend the holiday cooking on it. The pub over the road was good for meals, but think this could be noisy in the summer time. Parking down the road was no problem but again might be at busy times of the year. A usable wardrobe would have been really good in the second bedroom. Apart from these comments it was a very comfortable and well appointed cottage and we enjoyed our stay.
