The Sporades/Evia region
A trip to Greece's stunning Aegean islands will take you on a voyage through history, legends and poetic landscapes. The region's natural beauty was the inspiration for some of Ancient Greece's finest poets, including Homer, Sappho and Alcaeus. Today, more and more tourists are discovering the attraction of the Greek islands, with their heady mixture of ancient and modern.
Like most of Greece, the islands of the Aegean are incredibly rich in history. The island of Skiathos, home to Skiathos Island Villas, has been known by the same name since pre-Hellenic times, when it was home to the cult of the god Dionysus. Since then, countless civilisations and cultures have left their mark on the island, from the earliest pre-Hellenic settlers to the Cretans, Myceneans, Spartans, Macedonians, Romans, Venetians and Ottomans. Skiathos finally became part of the modern state of Greece in 1830. More recently, the island was occupied by the Nazis during the Second World War, and the town of Kastro became a refuge for Greek revolutionaries as well as Allied troops from Britain, Australia and New Zealand. It is safe to say that few islands as tiny as Skiathos have seen so much history!
The climate here is typical of the balmy Southern Mediterranean. It's warm and dry all year round, with long, hot summers. The average temperature in June is 23 degrees Celcius, rising to 25 degrees in July and August with occasional highs of around 30 degrees. Summer also sees an average of 10 hours of sunshine a day. At the same time, the refreshing "meltemi" wind prevents it from becoming unbearably hot. Make the most of our wonderful climate and enjoy outdoor activities such as swimming, walking and relaxing on the beach, then sit outside on a warm evening for a barbecue or a meal of local seafood al fresco.
Talking about food, our island location means that the local speciality is freshly-caught fish. Skiathos Town plays host to an evening fish market, and the mouth-watering aroma of fish barbecued on charcoal will greet you everywhere you go. Other local specialities to try include the famous local mezedes washed down with ouzaki, followed by the sweet almond desserts for which Skiathos is justifiably famous.
The Skiathos area
The island of Skiathos is just an hour away from Athens by plane, but once you get here you'll feel a world away from the smoggy, crowded metropolis. Our tiny island (just 5 miles long by 9 miles wide) is part of the Sporades chain in the Northwestern Aegean. With its great natural beauty and picturesque traditional villages, it's no surprise that Skiathos (along with the nearby island of Skopelos) was chosen as the location for the smash-hit Hollywood musical "Mamma Mia".
Skiathos Island Villas is located just three minutes' car journey from Skiathos Town, the only town on the island. The town's narrow streets are full of traditional whitewashed houses, many of them crowned with glorious bougainvillea. The bustling waterfront is home to a medieval fort, while the Old Harbour is the centre of the island's nightlife, with numerous cafes, restaurants and an evening fish market. From the port you can also embark on daily cruises around the island or to the neighbouring island of Skopelos. Skiathos Town is also home to the well-preserved house of the island's most famous literary figure, the poet Alexandros Papadiamantis.
Skiathos' climate and natural beauty make it an ideal destination if you enjoy outdoor activities. The island's 62 sandy beaches and warm, turquoise sea offer some of the best swimming in all of Greece, as well as opportunities for watersports and diving. The island's verdant, hilly interior, meanwhile, is perfect for walks along walking route 13, particularly in the spring when the temperatures are a little milder.
For a taste of the island's history, meanwhile, a short car journey will take you to the monasteries of Kounistra and Evangelistria. The former dates from the seventeenth century and boasts impressive sea views, while the latter claims to have raised the first Greek flag on the island in defiance of the Turks in 1827. An hour's walk from here will take you to the old fortified town of Kastro in the far north of the island, which was the principal settlement on Skiathos between 1300 and 1830, and more recently sheltered Greek and Allied troops during the Second World War.
