The North Denmark region
White sandy beaches of the west coast, shallow waters of the east coast and Sønderstrand is the beach located closest to the town. This is also the beach where the large Midsummer Eve´s bonfire is lit every year.
Surrounding Skagen you will find 60 km of lovely white beaches. On the Skagerrak coast the waves are a bit bigger, the water deeper and the currents more powerful than on the east coast. Bathing here is a bit more fun, but you need to exercise care and respect the forces of nature. The broad sandy beaches are perfect for sunbathing, fun and games. The beaches near the town aren not open to traffic but you can drive onto the beaches at Kandestederne and Skiveren. Remember that bathing off the tip of Grenen is prohibited due to the unpredictable currents there.
The Kattegat coast is the gentle coast. The beaches here aren not open to traffic, the water is shallow and the beaches are thus ideal for kids. There are plenty of bowl shaped dunes that are perfect for catching the sun. As the prevailing wind blows from the west the east coast will often be sheltered, although you should leave your inflatable water toys and airbeds on the beach when there is an offshore breeze. The blue flags along the coast indicate that the water is of the highest quality. The Kattegat beaches have a wealth of seashells that are washed up onto the shore and you may be lucky enough to find amber.
Skagen offers unique experiences all year round. Here you will find, a fascinating nature, authentic danish and scandinavian culture, exciting events and much more. In the pedestrian precinct you'll find an exciting choice of specialist shops, whilst at the harbour the red warehouses are fitted out as fishmongers' and restaurants. Skagen lives 365 days a year and welcomes guests regardless of the season. Spring and summer are the bright nights and romantic time. Autumn and winter invites to long walks with salt on the cheek or indoor enjoyment.
