The East Norway/Oslo region

East Norway varies from urban life in Oslo, via 1000 year old farms and stave churches in the moutains areas, to charming villages with water activities along the coast.

The capital
Oslo is a city of big contrasts. Experience the green forests behind a dog sled before you eat a gourmet meal in a Michelin-restaurant in the city centre, or spend an afternoon fishing or sailing on the fjord, followed by coffee in a trendy café at Grünerløkka and a walk by the historical river Akerselva.

Beautiful coastline
South of Oslo you will find charming villages along a rocky, beautiful coast. Both sides of the fjord invite you to water activities and offer great recreational areas. In the city of Tønsberg, you can visit the old Franciscan cloister and enjoy life in the busy harbour.

Mountains and valleys
North of Oslo you will find beautiful valleys with old farms, some of them a 1000 years old. This is an area of cultural activities and it is recommendable to explore stave churches in Valdres and Telemark, the old cathedral ruins at Hamar and the Olympic city of Lillehammer. Further north you find Jotunheimen mountain area, including Norway’s tallest mountain Galdhøpiggen at 2469 above sea level. Here are endless possiblies for those who love the outdoor life. Hiking and river rafting are popular activites.

Sjusjoen area

Nordseter and Sjusjøen area offer vast expanses of wilderness - mountains, plains, forests and lakes. There are also idyllic mountain farms, well-marked trails and excellent fishing. Bicycle paths along the mountain roads.
The Norwegian Mountain Touring Association (DNT) recommends a number of excellent marked trails in the varied wilderness of Nordseter, Sjusjøen and Øyerfjellet.

Nordseter is a great starting point if you are seeking the heights, such as the popular Mount Nevelfjell, 1089m with its magnificent view of the Jotunheimen and Rondane mountain ranges. From Sjusjøen, you can walk to Mount Lunkefjell or Mount Sjusjøfjell. The walk around Lake Sjusjøvannet, or to Fjellelva river, is an excellent alternative if you prefer to avoid climbing.
Fåberg Cultural Trail takes you through a 6000 year old cultural landscape.

The 4km long trail starts at Fåberg church. Pilgrims who travelled from Hamar to Trondheim walked along both the western and eastern shores of Lake Mjøsa, and through the Gudbrandsdals valley. Lillehammer Olympic Park is also a good starting point for walks through beautiful scenery, and there is an excellent trail along the Mesnaelva river not far from town centre.

WELCOME TO LILLEHAMMER

The Olympic Winter Games in 1994 that put the Lillehammer region on the international tourist map.
Located at the northern end of Norway’s largest lake, Lake Mjøsa, Lillehammer is recognized as the oldest winter sports destination in Norway. The first mountain hotels in Norway were built at Nordseter and Sjusjøen in the 1930s and 1940s, and in the 1950s winter tourists from Denmark arrived by charter plane and landed on the frozen ice on Lake Mjøsa.

Today Lillehammer offers a combination of traditions and modern-day attractions. Here you will find museums, galleries, Olympic facilities, unique restaurants and excellent shopping.
