The Crete region
It is said that once you visit Crete, you will be drawn back again and again, such is the charm and allure of this legendary island.
Crete is the southernmost island of Europe and, with its 300 days of sunshine, is blessed with one of the healthiest climates in Europe. Stretching 260 km from east to west, it is the largest of the Greek islands and lies at the crossroads of three continents – Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Crete is a land of breathtaking scenery with gorgeous sandy beaches, fertile valleys and towering snow-peaked mountains. It is a lively mix of old traditions and modern living. Traditional villages with hard working people, a lot of them still using donkeys and mules out on the fields, and cosmopolitan towns full of cars, shopping centres and all kinds of entertainment.
While enjoying all the benefits of globalization, the Cretans still preserve strong bonds with their rich folk traditions and cultural heritage. From an archaeological point of view, Crete is absolutely irresistible, covered with impressive sites that stretch back to the dawn of western civilization.
Sitia is a charming seaside town a mere 3km away from the Agave Villas. Unlike many resorts that are crowded in summer and ghostly in winter, Sitia is lively and bustling all year round. It is a living town that happens to have tourism, rather than the other way around.
Sitia was built in the Venetian times, destroyed and later rebuilt by the Turks, with just a few signs of this history surviving until present times. Today, the long sandy beach of Sitia offers all the pleasures of sun, sand, sea, and windsurfing.
The area around Sitia is home to monasteries, notably Toplou, archaeological sites (the nearest just 100 meters from the Agave Villas), palm beaches, and fascinating trails across the mountains. Exploring Eastern Crete, also known as Lassithi, takes you on a journey through the magnificent countryside with its spectacular gorges, gentle valleys, incredibly beautiful hidden beaches and bays, and enchanting villages where time seems to have stopped a hundred years ago. Many traditional villages perched on steep mountain slopes are found only 15 minutes away by car.
•Beaches. A short 15-minute drive east takes you to a fabulous palm beach Vai. Eastern coast of Crete with its magnificent coastline, secluded beaches, and ancient ruins is within a 30-minute drive, as are the rugged rocky beaches of the Southern coast (Libyan Sea).
•Get blown away by the winds of Crete! Freak Surf, one of the best windsurfing centres in Europe, is only 15 minutes away by car, in a beautiful sandy bay with outstanding wind statistics.
•Local dining. Enjoy the excellent local cuisine and the memorable hospitality of the Greeks in the many family restaurants that you will find in every village as you explore Eastern Crete.
•A Cradle of Wine. Did you know that Crete and Wine are synonyms? A day trip to a unique winery can be arranged for you upon request.
•Boat trips & day cruises to nearby islands (Santorini, Kos, Karpathos).
•Fishing & fishing trips with local fishermen.
•Hiking &s nature trails.
•CretAquarium. The largest aquarium of the Mediterranean is where you discover the fascinating world of the deep sea.
•Car rental. To explore the island you would want to rent a car. Several agencies operate in the airport of Heraklion, and there are a few here in Sitia. A car can be reserved for you upon request.
