About this location
The Catalunia region
Barcelona is a modern city so there are always lots of events and festivals throughout the year ranging from the performing arts to sport to carnivals. For example, in September you can watch a carnival, an air show, fireworks, a George Michael concert, a Flamenco and opera show and a football match.
One of the main highlights of the summer in Barcelona is the Festa Major in the district of Gràcia - the biggest of Barcelona´s neighbourhood festivals. For a week each August the area is transformed with wonderfully decorated streets, live music and plenty of things going on in the numerous plazas.
Stroll Las Ramblas and enjoy Barcelona's unique blend of Catalan culture, distinctive architecture, lively nightlife and trendy, stylish hotels. You'll find Europe's best-preserved Gothic Quarter here, as well as amazing architectural works by Gaudi. La Sagrada Familia, considered Gaudi's masterpiece, is still under construction (your entrance fee helps to fund the project). Feel like a picnic? Look no further than the rambunctious La Boqueria market, where you can stock up on local delicacies.
Sitges is a beautiful town with easy access to Barcelona and surrounds. It is famous for its bohemian lifestyle and culture. There are several museums, a variety of boutiques, restaurants and lovely sandy beaches. One of Sitges´s main features is its 16th century church, which can be reached from the main beach. Beyond is the most picturesque part of town with narrow streets with small cottages with flower filled balconies. Around this area you will find Sitges museums and galleries, which are filled with artwork from some of the most famous artists such as Picasso, Russinol and el Grecco. However the walk along the seafront, from the marina to the headland in the south is the most enjoyable for both locals and tourists.
Festivals: One of the most famous Sitges festivals is Carnival time; thousands of visitors from all over Europe come to experience this vibrant event. It consists of 4 different parades named “ Debauchery parade” followed by a “ gay parade” the “ children's parade and the extermination parade. After these parades come to an end there is a ceremony, which signifies the end of this festival, and everyone looks forwards to next year.
