The Lombardy region

The Lombardy region is well-served by airports, and there are UK flights to Milan Linate, Milan Malpensa, Milan Bergamo and Brescia airports. Milan, as Italy's business capital, is well-connected to the rest of Italy by high-speed rail links. An efficient public transport network covers the rest of Lombardy.

Lombardy (Lombardia) is a wealthy and busy region, but between commerce and industry it also fits in an impressive number of prime tourist destinations.

Located in northern Italy, stretching over the Alps, plains and lakes, Lombardy's scenery is varied and sometimes dramatic. The flat area around Milan is dotted with art cities, but for a glimpse of natural splendours, head for the edge of the mountains. Here the Alps tumble down into steep valleys and lakes, in a scenic feast which has enraptured travellers for centuries.

Lombardy's regional capital is Milan; and the region's other provinces are: Lecco, Varese, Como, Bergamo, Sondrio, Brescia, Cremona, Mantova, Pavia and Lodi.

Lombardy's regional cuisine includes specialities such as risotto alla milanese, frogs (in Pavia), ossobuco alla milanese, bresaola and polenta.

Milan is a big destination for business travellers, but many tourists also spend a day or more there before moving on. Art-lovers will not want to miss the masterpieces in the city's galleries. For longer, more tranquil holidays, huge numbers head for the Italian lakes: Lake Como and Lake Iseo are entirely within Lombardy, while the region's borders run along one shore of Lake Maggiore (in the west) and one shore of Lake Garda (in the east).

Sirmione

Sirmione, famous since antiquity for its generous thermal waters, stretches along a thin peninsula that protrudes into Lake Garda for about 4 km. It's one of the most beautiful places of the lake, from which one can enjoy the splendid views of both shores: the villas arose since roman times, including poet Catullo's one, who celebrated the beauty of these places in his verses. Nature and history: from Scaliger Castle to the archaeological site, located on the end of the peninsula, Sirmione contains matchless treasures of art and history.

Sirmione is not only the ancient borough. The area outside the deck is rich in history, too.To the south of the peninsula, in a densely urbanized area today, the ancient forest Lugana Ligana or Lucan or Litana, stretched. Due to its strategic location, it was the scene of many feats of arms, including the clash between Constantine and Maxentius in 312 A.D.. In 452 A.D. Pope Leo the Great convinced Attila, leader of the Huns, to return to the north perhaps right here in the wilderness, in an unknown place. The toponyms in this area such as St. Benedict, St. Martin and St. Vigilius, recall the work of land reclamation that was held here by the monks. In the early sixteenth century the forest had almost disappeared, since it was colonized and exploited as agricultural land. The clay soils of the cultivated areas still produce the famous wine Lugana.

Now, in the territory that was part of the forest Lugana, there are two densely inhabited centers that constitute two fractions of Sirmione: Lugana and Colombare. Lugana is a settlement that exstends particularly around the church, built between 1910 and 1912, and it stretches to encompass the territory of the village Rovizza, Rovizzi's ancient estate. Here you can visit the church dedicated to St. Ursula, once noble chapel, and the Monument to the Alpines, witness of the sacrifice of many people from Sirmione who served in this corps.

Colombare takes its name from an ancient farmstead that today is disappeared and it was an expanse of fields dotted with a few rural homes until after World War II. In the sixties the booming population wanted their church, it was dedicated to St. Fancis and inaugurated in 1969.The building, which interprets the news of the years of the second Vatican Council, looks like a big tent with a circular plan, built of stone, cement, copper and colored glass.

The natural attractions and historical-archaeological sites are not the only ones that characterize Sirmione: since the Renaissance an hot sulfur springs was known, the Bojola, welling up from the seabed at 250 meters from the east bank.

However, the attempt to channel and exploit the water, retaining its original temperature, was successful only in 1896. From this date, the thermal activity of Sirmione was then expanded and became known throughout Europe. After the setback suffered by the economy due to the Great War, the property and the grant were transferred to the Sirmione Spa and Great Hotels Company, born in 1921, that still holds it. The business suffered another break due to World War II, during which the occupying troops damaged both hotel structures and spa facilities. Since the end of the war, however, the Baths experienced a great boost, crucial for the employment and the economy of Sirmione. The resumption had a major milestone in 1948 with the construction of the new Spa Centre and with the creation of a Care Deafness Centre. Currently the plant are two: Catullus, in the center, and, since 1987, Virgil, in Colombare.

The thermal water is used in the treatment and prevention of ENT, broncopneumologic, rheumatologic, orthopedic, dermatological and gynecological disorders. The Aquaria center was inaugurated in 2003 at Catullo, that, reffering to the old Roman traditions, offers a thermal pool as a source of well-being.

We can therefore say that in the twentieth century Sirmione has resumed and expanded that tourism already present in the first century B.C.: it has been reminded as the Roman buildings, of which were found the remains, were "second homes" of wealthy families in the area. For centuries Sirmione has been visited by tourists attracted by its natural beauty and its historical memories, but hotels, villas, holiday homes, tourist facilities were born just after World War II.

Currently the challenge that administrators and tour operators have to face is very different from the one of fifty years ago: at that time it concerned the tourist increase, now we must seek a balance between the need to preserve the character of the place and the strong stress arising from the continuous influx of visitors, at which is added the increase of population that is affecting the entire Garda Lake.

Thanks a lot for your kind review. We've appreciated it.

"Great stay in very comfortable apartment"

We stayed in this apartment during the last week of July. It is very clean, comfortable and well equipped. We were met by the owner precisely at the time agreed and he was very helpful in getting us settled in. We had hired a car for our week's stay but it was not totally necessary. There is a large supermarket, restaurants and very nice public beach within walking distance and the bicycles provided would have been very handy for getting around. We didn't get an opportunity to use them but there were quite a lot of cyclists in Sirmione and it's a great way to see the sights without having to find parking! There is a bus stop very close to the back exit from the apartment and this bus brings you to the old town. We used it once and would recommend it as it was very regular and efficient service. The swimming pool and sports facilities just across the road from the apartment were fantastic. We had to pay a small entrance fee every day but for that the facilities were excellent and you could stay all day. Our kids loved it and didn't want to leave!

Thanks a lot for your kind review.
