The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region
Languedoc, occupies the Mediterranean coast of France broadly between the rivers Rhone and Aude (or Provence to Rousillon), and extends northward towards the Southern Massif Central.
it's diversity caters for all tastes, from mountaineering to wind surfing, from birdwatching to sunbathing, from canoeing the rapids to diving. Less active visitors enjoy visits to historical medieval towns, art galleries and historical sites of interest. Still others visit the area for cookery, painting or computer courses in nice surroundings. Many people just enjoy the weather, eat well, and sample the wine they will buy to take home.
One of the neighbouring villages of Homps, a five-minute drive away, is a port on the Canal du Midi, the historic 17th century waterway that links the Mediterranean to the Atlantic. The Canal du Midi is a World Heritage for Humanity Site by UNESCO and is one of the most scenic ways to travel through the surrounding landscape of vineyards and pinewoods. Small motorboats can be rented, or there are day trips on old barges to the city of Béziers near the coast and Carcassonne to the west.
OTHER PLACES TO VISIT
Minerve – a must see medieval city on the Gorge of the Cesse. The town offers easy walking with various cafes and restaurants, the gorges need reasonable footwear but are beautiful the further up them you go.
Lagrasse – beautiful medieval town with a still functioning monastery. Scenic drive to get there.
Abbey de Frontfroide – A beautiful abbey still in use today in the heart of Cathar country. Excellent guided tours with lots of facts and figures and nice restaurant.
Beaches. There are plenty of clean, sandy, shallow beaches along the whole coast. The nearest are about 30 mins drive away.
To the east, Narbonne Plage and Gruissan are a scenic drive over the Massif de Clappe. The beach is very wide when you get there so quite a walk from where you can park your car. Narbonne Plage can be very busy in summer but offers restaurants and shops as an alternative to the beach. A more cross-country route towards Fleury takes you to a less developed beach area where there is just beach and no boulevard and associated bars/restaurants etc.
To the north-east, Valras Plage is slightly smaller than Narbonne Plage with good water, sand and restaurants, shops etc. South of here is Vendres Plage and there is a stretch of beach which is not as wide as most other places and therefore easier in the hot months.
Rivers The beautiful spot of Bize-Minervois is very pretty. The water is cold but usually very clear. If you follow the road up towards Agel, there is another lovely river spot about 1 km before Agel. Before Bize the river at the Cabezac bridge is also very pretty and shallow.
Heading towards Lagrasse in the Corbieres, the little waterfalls, rapids and shallows in the river at Ribaute is a very picturesque spot.
Siran area
Siran is a picturesque village near Olonzac, in the heart of the Minervois wine growing district. A small and welcoming village of approximately 600 residents with a network of narrow streets at its centre. The house overlooks Siran’s ancient church that has a clock tower which is a remnant of the former Castle of Siran.
Though small, Siran has a few local shops you may want to know about: the boulangerie (for daily fresh bread, savouries and patisserie) is just 2 mins from the house as is the Vival Grocery! The "Le Minervois Bar" recently renovated under new ownership is a good place for a coffee or something stronger. Furthermore there is a post office, several wine producers, the village pump and a well preserved weighbridge! Siran also has the original Chateau of Siran that is now a first class hotel / restaurant.
How to get there
Siran is in the heart of the famous wine area of the Languedoc-Roussillon - The closest airport is Carcassonne Airport, (at only 30 minutes) currently only available via Ryanair but shortly Air France will also be flying into Carcassonne Airport. Other airports within a 1 hour to 1,5 hour drive are Montpellier, Perpignan and Toulouse. (Ryan-air and Easyjet)
