The Costa de Lisboa/Lisbon region

- Sandy beaches galore all along the coast nearby
- Many superb seafood and other restaurants nearby
- Tennis, riding, golf, mountain biking - and some of the best surfing in Portugal
- Nightclubs and many bars nearby
- But it is also great just to relax by the pool in the villa, with its breath-taking mountain views
- Historic Lisbon and Sintra nearby, with art galleries and palaces and festivals
- Unusually, for Portugal, there are many fabulous walks also nearby, both along the coastal clifftops and in the mountain and on the hilltop of Sintra
- An organic farm shop is 10 minutes walk away. Other shops, street markets and supermarkets are all nearby (in walking distance in Mucifal or a short drive away) ... and tourist shopping is just a short drive away in Sintra.
- The old and nearby small town of Colares is famous for its wine, and the viticulture cellars and facilities can be visited.
- Many locals you meet are likely to speak English
- There are many great restaurants nearby, eg in Praia das Macas village on the sea (about 5 km from the house). Neptuno and Buzio restaurants are recommended. In Colares, there are a number of good restaurants including the reasonably priced Central. Sintra old town also has good restaurants and most seaside villages.

Sintra / Galamares area

The local region is famous for its beaches, restaurants, palaces, walking and golf. And Lisbon is only 30-40 minutes away ...

The beaches of Sintra's coastline are famous: Praia Grande (great for surfing), Praia das Maçãs, Praia da Adraga (just below Praia Grande on the map above) and Magoito (further south), all from 10 to 20 minutes car trip from the house. There is another really big beach called Guincho south west of the house (about 25 minutes drive, past Colares and then south round the end of Sintra mountain), where the surfing world championships have been held.
Around the sandy stretch of the Praia das Maçãs there are several restaurants (Neptuno is great), cafés, bars, a disco, tennis courts, as well as shops selling local crafts, esplanades and excellent food both in the summer or in the winter. A picturesque tramline connects Praia das Maçãs, Colares and Sintra. There are also a number of excellent restaurants on Guincho beach.
In Galamares village, which is on the way between Sintra and the house, spread out along the road, there is a good pottery and tiles shop on the right as you come from Sintra.

About Sintra
Sintra town is a great place to visit. The old town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995 maintains. Scattered on the hillside there are buildings and sites of historical and architectural interest. The most unusual is possibly Palácio da Pena, a 19th Century folly built by D. Fernando II boasting different styles. Within the old town there are several museums, including the famous Museu do Brinquedo showing toys from the past and present. The most interesting old building is the well-preserved medieval Palacio Nacional do Sintra, in the old town, which is well worth a visit.
There are many handicraft and antiques shops (also in San Pedro). The modern art gallery is new and really good. It has new shows all the time. It is located in the newer part of town.
You can see Sintra by horse-drawn carriages, which will take you around the town as well as Sintra's mountains.
Overlooking the town are the ruined ramparts of the Castelo dos Mouros, a fort dating from the 8th Century. Within it there is an ancient Moorish cistern and the panoramic views from its walls are most impressive. The castle is definitely worth a visit, and not that many people go there as it involves a bit of walking (about 1 km).
Several private palaces are open to the public. Among these Palácio de Seteais, a magnificent 18th Century home (built for a king’s mistress) now converted into a five star Hotel, and with an excellent formal garden. The Palácio de Seteais does an excellent afternoon tea for those so inclined.
Montserrat is highly recommended for its botanical gardens. It is only about 2 km from the house (you need to drive west to Colares and then double back along the other side of the valley, opposite the house). You can see the red and white rococo domes nearby from the garden. The Palácio de Monserrate was rebuilt by William Beckford (who also built Fonthill in Wiltshire, England).
Another place of interest is the Convento dos Capuchos (up the mountain/hill of Serra da Sintra, to the right, about 35 minutes away by car), an unusual hermitage founded in 1560 with tiny dwarf cells cut from the rock. The gothic Regaleira Palace is also uphill from Sintra old town.
The Serra da Sintra hill is a great beauty spot itself, with many walks (and small, twisting roads) amidst cascading trees and rocks, and with fabulous views all around. It is a national park, but has very few people in it as the Portuguese do not generally go walking. High up on the eastern end of the hill is Peninha Chapel, with dramatic views and wonderful rock formations.

Golf
Sintra is also very good for golf holiday makers: there are 8 courses within easy reach. The Penha Longa course (home of the Estoril Open) is 10 km away and hosts several championships. It has an excellent level of maintenance and beautiful panoramic views over the Sintra hill (Serra de Sintra). Also nearby are Estoril Golf, Quinta da Marinha Golf, Quinta da Beloura Golf, Belas Golf – all about 30 min. drive from the villa. Cascais, an old fishing town has wonderful cafes, restaurants, shops and discotheques and a new marina (with plenty of restaurants) where you can play all of the year. Estoril has, also, to offer you an interesting night life and several golf courses.

Guestbook

- "We had a marvellous holiday in your villa. It was so easy to be there, with everything very handy ... we ended up spending most of the time just relaxing in the pool and garden and eating out nearby ... the beaches were great and the children loved the tram ride," Peter and Nicola Battle
- "Great time ... loads of sun but somewhere cool to escape from the worst of it, near the pool in the shade ... peaceful too. The green garden made such a difference. The kids were wild about the beaches especially Praia Grande and Praia das Macas. Nice variety. Liked the organic hippy shop nearby too," Tim and Joao Lewin
- "Top holidays ... just too sad to leave ... great views and colours to paint ... wild memories of partying in the villa and some fantastic dinners in restaurants ... so nice to have beaches with character to choose from," Peter and Victoria Lloyd-Jones
